❛ they hit us. we hit them. ❜MACKENZIE LEAPED FROM the dock, plunging herself below the water's surface that afternoon. Her brother and Pope resided on the rickety dock, watching her, Kiara and John B swim around each other in the water.
John B moved in close, taping the lease and rubbing his teeth in front of the drone's lens. The Pogues--minus Mackenzie, had retrieved it yesterday at the salvage yard, her father's previous place of employment.
Mackenzie swam over, pretending to clean the lease with her hand before waving to it. It moved around the three, circling them before they kicked to the surface.
Kiara was first to break through the water barrier, John B and Mackenzie following a few moments later.
Poking his head out of the water, shook his head like a golden retriever, spraying water over Mackenzie. "Watch it, asshole!" she groaned as she squeezed her eyes shut, preventing water to get into them. John B laughed and swam over to her, dunking her under again.
Mackenzie shoves him off once more, swimming over to Kiara as she bobbed in the water beside her. "Hey, once we get footage of the wreck, we'll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a formal claim," John B says a few feet away.
JJ groaned, leaning on the dock railing. "It's such bullshit. Why do we have to do that?"
"Well, there is a maritime salvage law. You can't just go to the ocean floor and scoop a bunch of stuff up."
"I know. I know. It's just lawyers aren't cheap, bro."
Mackenzie shakes her head, looking to Kiara. "He didn't know that." Kiara laughs, the two of them gazing up to JJ to see him holding his middle finger out toward his sister, her offering hers in return.
"As soon as they see the footage, they'll work for a comp," John B shrugs.
"How do you know all of that?" questioned Kie.
"'Cause my dad said it, like, a million times."
"Yeah, that's fair." Kiara started swimming back to the dock.
"The tether is, like, really long. In the wrong weather, this thing could get pushed around," Pope points out.
"Then we'll go at dead calm." Mackenzie pushes herself up onto the latter, her head turning at the sound of rumbling thunder in the distance. "At slack tide?"
"So now, we just gotta wait around for the right weather." Pope glances up at the sky. "And today is not that day."
Wrapping a towel around her body, Mackenzie glances up. "No, it is not."

Mackenzie stood with JJ and Pope on the end of Heyward's boat as they loaded groceries into the cabin. Mackenzie hadn't originally planned to be there, but seeing as it was her day off and she needed the extra money, she agreed when Pope asked if she wanted to tag along with them.
