"Anna can't make it, she's too popular for us to share remember?" Kate teases after I rejected her party invite.
Surrounded in a small circle was Jean on the left, Evelyn on the right and Kate in front of me. Before only sticking with Quinn, I used to hang out with these girls all the time. I met Kate freshman year, she introduced me to Jean and lastly Evelyn.
I remember Kate and I teaching Jean how to not get caught shoplifting freshman year. It wasn't my most honorable moment since I could probably afford it, it was just the thrill of getting caught that was fun for me. Anyway, Jean ended up getting stopped by security because she admitted to having put the top under her blouse. We laughed it off afterwards.
That's just one example of how much of a goody two shoes Jean is, she's smart and kind which is hard to find in girls these days. Evelyn, used to be so boy crazy it would drive me insane because she would actually obsess over them. I'd always thought it was absurd to obsess over a guy, maybe I was just used to it always being the other way around.
Freshman year Anna used to think Kate was her competition, I wasn't always as "popular" as I am now, you could say Kate was in a way. Teachers would mix us up because apparently we "looked similar" I didn't like being compared to anyone so I'd hate it when I was accidentally called Kate.
Kate was nice, if you had just bumped into her, she'd say sorry and when you're gone she'd call you a bitch behind your back. That's how I'd describe her. I hate to admit it because I don't think anyone is better than me, but we have similar personalities. She's sly and can be a real bitch when she wants to. There's a reason why we aren't as close anymore.
"I'm going as an escaped prisoner so that I can find a hot cop, guys always go with hot cop." Evelyn says, fanning herself.
"Who's idea was it to have a costume party in the middle of August?" Jean asks seriously making Evelyn giggle.
"Mine, we watched Mean Girls the other day and I told Kate we just had to have a costume party. It's too bad you aren't going Anna, we haven't seen you in so long." Evelyn saddens.
"What's been keeping you so busy?" Kate asks, a slight tilt to her head.
It feels like a call out but that's what she wants, to seem intimidating. I just smile and pretend.
"Tennis, homework and my mom. The usual. I'd love to come to your party but I'm too behind on my homework."
"Right, you and Jean are such nerds you'll give up anything just to study." Kate scoffs now standing.
