I put my hands on my hips. "I thought you were never going to come to one of my lame clinics." Oof. That came out harsher than I intended.
"I didn't expect to be able to," he shrugs, "but my brother-in-law picked up my nephew today." He studies me for a moment. "You're really fast, Lil-chan."
I grunt. "I would hope so. I did run track, after all."
He nods. "You must have been good at it."
I look at him quizzically. Why is he saying nice things to me? Has he always said nice things to me and I just always overlooked it? If so, I feel feel even worse about how I've treated him. "Listen," I say, looking down and scuffing the toe of my sneaker on the floor. "I want to say sorry for how rude I was on Friday. That last comment was unnecessary and you didn't deserve that." Even if he does deserve some of the other stuff I've done. "Thanks for coming to my clinic."
Oikawa doesn't say anything, and I'm not about to look up to see his face. After a moment, he bends over, picks up my things, and hands them to me. "Could you write down that workout routine for me? I think it's one I'll want to keep doing."
"Oh... s-sure. Absolutely. I can do that." I shut my mouth to stop stammering.
"Thanks, Lil-chan. I'll walk you home." He walks out the door and starts locking up.
I frown, following him. "Hey, if we're asking favors of each other, could you just call me Lillian? Lil-chan makes me sound all cutesy."
He looks at me like he's confused, then winks. "But Lil-chan shows my affection for our cute team manager!"
"See?" I roll my eyes as we start walking. "It's great that you guys like having me as the manager, but I don't care about the cute stuff. I would really prefer it if you'd just call me Lillian."
Oikawa is quiet for a second and I wonder if I've offended him somehow. "I'm the only one you tell that to."
"And you're the only one who calls me Lil-chan!"
His tone was accusatory, but his eyes hold a hurt expression. "Everyone else on the team calls you Lily, but you tell me to call you Lillian."
Crap. I did offend him. I'm such a jerk. "Oh, really?" I try to bluff. "I didn't even reali— I didn't, um, ... ugh. Sorry. You can call me Lily."
"Perfect," he smirks. "Lily-chan it is!"
I sigh and look up at the evening sky. "Give an inch..." I mutter.
"What?"
"Oh, nothing. It's an American saying."
He hums. "Oh, and you can call me Oikawa-senpai." He turns to me with a glint in his eye.
I give him a pained look. "Can I not?"
"If you expect me to call you Lily..." He says in a singsong way.
"Give an inch, they'll take a mile. Yeah, right. They'll take three or four miles," I growl.
"What?"
I glare at him. "Maybe we should go back to you calling me Lillian."
He returns my glower with a pout that would turn his fangirls into putty.
