I can't believe the Interhigh Preliminaries are here already. Matches start next week, which gives me one more clinic before the tournament. The past couple weeks I haven't had to plan much, since Yahaba has requested serving practice. But this time I want to plan something special, to help the team get hyped for the tournament.
Oikawa hasn't shown up to a clinic since my workout. I didn't expect him to, nor did I really want him to, but I can't deny there was a different vibe at the clinic he attended. The team bond felt stronger, more confident. That's the feeling I want at the clinic right before prelims. And that means convincing Oikawa to come. I know he has a responsibility for his nephew, but I need the team captain there.
I need to accomplish two things in order for that to happen. 1) I need to plan a clinic that will get the team pumped, but not exhaust them before the tournament. 2) I need to arrange everything so that Oikawa will be able to come. I'll even pick up his nephew for him if I have to. Though that's not realistic either, since I need to lead the clinic.
I haven't spoken to Oikawa much since I went to his house and nearly knocked his bratty girlfriend flat on her butt, despite the other third-years' attempts to get us to interact. Matsukawa suggested I eat lunch with them, but Arisu eats lunch with them too, so the one time we tried, that did not go well. It was basically me and Arisu simultaneously ignoring and insulting each other the whole time. Since then, they've dialed back their efforts, although Yuda wasn't very happy about it.
I'm going to have to push all that awkwardness aside and get this done though. It's Friday, so I need a plan ready to go by practice. Looks like I'll be brainstorming instead of paying attention in class. I pull out a piece of paper and start to write.
"Hey guys, watch my stuff, will you? I'll be back before lunch is over."
Yahaba and Watari start at my sudden unceremonial dumping of my backpack on the table and me stumbling over the bench in my haste.
"Whoa, where are you going?" Watari asks, grabbing my arm to steady me.
I wave my brainstorming paper that now has writing scribbled all over both sides at him. "Just have to talk to Oikawa-san and Iwaizumi-san about Monday's clinic!" And with that, I run off. I want to get this over with as quickly as possible. Fighting with Oikawa's girlfriend is not going to help my relationship with him get any better, so I'm unrealistically hoping she won't be there. If she is, I don't want to be there any longer than I have to be.
I stop running before I reach the courtyard where the third-years eat lunch so I can scout out the situation.
Sure enough, Arisu is there on Oikawa's left, sitting close enough to him to practically be on his right. There's also a hoard of other girls hanging around their table, flirting with the guys and throwing longing glances at Oikawa.
I roll my eyes and try to discreetly catch Iwaizumi's attention. Unsuccessfully. He's attacking his food like the school cafeteria just announced they'd be going on strike tomorrow. Ugh. I jump and wave more aggressively, earning me some weird looks from the students closer to me.
Luckily, Hanamaki is a much calmer eater and much more observant than Iwaizumi. He catches sight of me and I point dramatically at Iwaizumi.
Hanamaki cocks his head at me with a puzzled look, clearly not understanding what I want from him.
I point my finger at him and swing it over to Iwaizumi, trying to make my gestures more obvious. I shove my finger at Iwaizumi a few more times to emphasize that it is him that I need.
