The girl glaring at me on Oikawa's front porch is the type of pretty that screams popular. Her dark hair is in two fluffy buns on top of her head, and I'm sure that her makeup is at least half an inch thick. Her glare is full of disdain, and she's probably thinking how incompetent I must be to nearly bump into her.
I instantly dislike her.
I raise my chin and say in a hard voice, "I'm Lillian."
"Well, Lillian," she scoffs, "you should watch where you're going. What are you doing at Kawa-chan's house?"
My eyebrows shoot up and I have to hold in a bark of laughter at the ridiculous nickname.
"Lillian is the volleyball team's new manager, so I was showing her where the team hangs out," Oikawa steps between us.
My eyebrows crawl impossibly higher when Oikawa calls me Lillian instead of Lily or Lil-chan. Who is this girl to demand answers from me and get Oikawa to call me by my full name in one go?
"Lillian, meet my girlfriend, Arisu-chan."
Ah, girlfriend. That would do it.
"Nice to meet you, Arisu. I apologize for almost knocking you over." I don't mean a word of it. I wish I had knocked her over.
"Hm." The other girl hums and looks me up and down. "Well, that's alright. I have no reason to hold a grudge against a clumsy, oafish girl like you."
Clumsy? Oafish?! Just because I'm taller and more muscled than her?!
I force myself to grin at her. "How kind. After all, a pampered, prissy girl like you shouldn't be bothered by the rough and tough, capable type like me."
She completely ignores me and jumps into Oikawa's arms, saying something about how her salon appointment went late, blah blah blah.
It takes everything in me to refrain from gagging. Of course Oikawa would date someone like her. "Well, I'm off." At this point, it seems like I've been forgotten. The subsequent flash of anger gives me an evil idea. "See you at practice tomorrow, Oikawa-senpai," I say louder, putting extra emphasis on senpai.
Oikawa's eyes flash to mine and Arisu slips down from his arms to glare daggers at me.
I give them both a knowing grin and walk away. As I do, I hear Arisu turn an annoying voice of chastisement on Oikawa.
"What did I say about bringing volleyball home? Don't do it. Leave it at school. Especially if she's part of it. Volleyball is a club, Kawa-chan; it shouldn't take up my time with you."
I look back with my face screwed up in disbelief. Is she serious? I try to make eye contact with Oikawa, but he's looking at the ground and nodding. He's going to take that? I haven't known him for a long time, but even though he likes to act perfect and flirt with his fangirls, I can tell that volleyball is his life. How dare she attack his passion like that? I never thought I would get defensive for Oikawa's sake, but this girl is the devil.
"Oikawa-senpai!" I yell from the sidewalk. I thought about dropping the senpai, but I figure Arisu can yell at him for that as much as she wants. "Is there anything you need me to do? For practice tomorrow?"
He just shakes his head.
I shrug. I guess who he dates and how awful she is isn't my business. That's his problem.
I know my house is only a couple blocks away from Oikawa's, but I still manage to get lost on my way back. Several times I have tried to turn back onto the right course, but to no avail. I know my address, but only verbally. How to type the Kanji or even navigate the streets here using addresses is beyond me. I sigh. What a poor oversight on my part.
Looking around, I see nothing familiar. I pull out my phone to call Oikawa to come guide me home, then realize I don't have his number. Or anyone's on the team, for that matter. I curse and plop down against a tree. Mom would be just as clueless to my location as I am, and Dad won't be done working for another couple hours. Which means I'm stranded until then. After fuming at myself for a couple minutes for having no sense of direction, I pull out my homework. Might as well try to get some of it done while I'm stuck here.
Three assignments later, I hear pounding feet through my headphones and look up to see a tall figure running down the street. I tense up, ready to run or fight if I need to. But as soon as the figure is close enough for me to make out his hair, I relax. I'd recognize that onion head anywhere. I stand up to wave him down. When he notices me, I can see him jump and blush. I grin at him. "Hey, Kindaichi. What, my workout wasn't enough for you?"
"No, no, your workout was great, it was fantastic, I just always run on Monday nights and I didn't want to disrupt my routine, so I decided to still go running even though I did your workout earlier—"
"It's fine, Kindaichi," I laugh. "I was teasing. I'm actually really glad you happened to come by here. Do you think you could help me with something?"
"Of course, Lily-san!"
"Great!" I tell the tall first-year my situation and give him my address, and he starts us walking in the right direction. "Oh, we can run if you want. I don't want to disrupt your routine again."
Kindaichi makes a mess of gestures and stammers, "Oh, th-thanks, but you've got your backpack and—"
I wave him off. "Nah, I'm fine." And I start to jog. When he starts to run with me, I let him take a slight lead since I still don't know where I'm going. "Hey, Kindaichi," I say, after we've run in silence for a minute. "Have you ever met Oikawa's girlfriend?"
"Huh? Um, no, I don't think so. I know he has one, but she doesn't come around the gym, so I've never had the chance to meet her. Have you?"
I narrow my eyes. "Yeah, just now actually."
"And?"
"Let's just say Oikawa-san got quite the scolding for having me over. Something about bringing volleyball home when it should be left in the gym."
"Weird."
"Yeah." We turn a corner and I recognize my street. "I know where we are now. Thanks, Kindaichi-kun! You are now free to go on your run without me interrupting you!"
He waves goodbye and increases his pace as I slow down in front of my house. I watch him go, then head inside. I drop my backpack on the couch and pull out a piece of paper. It's time for me to start a Things To Do As Team Manager list. And getting everyone's numbers is the first thing I'm writing down
