I saw your father yesterday, Benjamin. He seems to be doing okay without you around. He just seems more distant than ever. I don't think he can help it either. It's not every day this happens.
Your voice sang through my house the very next morning.
'Dearest Ellie, I've missed you,' you said, your voice so sweet that honey would be jealous.
'Hey Benjamin,' I said, opening the door for him. 'And you only saw me yesterday?'
'That is too long, Ellie. Much too long for my liking,' you said, confidently.
I felt colour rush to my cheeks in that moment, Benjamin.
You continued on as if you hadn't made my heart melt. 'I picked some very beautiful flowers this morning and, even though they look very pretty in my garden, I thought they would look even prettier making someone's day.'
You handed me a daisy from your sizeable bouquet, a lopsided smile stretching across your cheeks.
'Will you come with me?' you asked.
'Of course.'
So we drove into a busier part of town, not like where we first met. People were buzzing; walking, chatting, running, shopping.
So you, Benjamin, took your handful of pretty daisies and stood on the side walk with the biggest, cheesiest grin etched on your face.
We watched people stroll past us until you eventually made a decision.
'Hello, sir. You're looking very spiffy today. Here,' you said, 'let me help.' You took a daisy in your hand and tucked it into his suits pocket, adjusting it so it sat just perfectly.
He smiled at you and patted your back. 'You're a good kid,' he said, 'I hope life treats you well. Thank you.'
You smiled back at me, where I was standing with my back pressed to a building's wall as I watched you.
You sent me a quick wink and I giggled, before you headed back to your gifting.
'Hello, ma'am. I hope you are having a good day. Here's a pretty daisy that's almost as pretty as you!' you said, handing out one of your flowers to a passing woman to catch her attention.
'Why thank you, young man. God bless your kind soul,' she thanked, taking your gift from your fingertips before smiling and walking away.
'Oh my goodness, Benjamin,' I chuckled.
'What?' you asked with a shy smile.
'You are so kind and good with people.'
'It comes with time, Ellie. That's all it is,' you said, intertwining our fingers with your spare hand.
And I don't think you realised it, Benjamin, but you made my heart beat right out of my chest.
What a wonderful human being you were.
