When morning came, I woke up earlier than Lexie. I didn't even notice the time, but it is afternoon already. As I lay there, I found myself lost in thought, appreciating her presence and the way she seemed to bring a sense of calm into my life. I couldn't help but marvel at how special she was, even amid the difficulties she was facing.

Suddenly, Lexie stirred and opened her eyes. "Hey, aren't you going to work?" she asked, her voice still groggy with sleep.

I turned to her with a gentle smile. "I took a sick leave. I figured that you might need me today. Brielle and your Mom asked me to look out for you while they're away."

Lexie gave a small chuckle, her eyes softening. "You don't have to do that. I can take care of myself, you know. It's not like I'm going to jump out of the window," she joked, trying to lighten the mood.

I felt a pang of concern at her words, even though she was trying to make light of it. "Hey, don't joke about things like that!" I said, my voice carrying a mix of concern and lightness. "You know I'm here for you, and I want to make sure you're alright."

Lexie smiled warmly at me, appreciating my concern.

Lexie offered to let me borrow some of her clothes so I could change into something more comfortable. I gratefully accepted and headed to the bathroom to freshen up. When I came back, Lexie was waiting with a bright, inviting smile.

"Ready for a little adventure?" she asked, her eyes twinkling with renewed energy.

"Definitely," I replied, feeling a lift in my spirits at her enthusiasm, even though I have no idea where in the world we were going. "Lead the way."

We decided to explore the neighborhood, a change from the heavy atmosphere of last night. As we walked, Lexie became more carefree and open. She laughed easily, her demeanor more relaxed than I had seen in a long time. The air was crisp, and the sun cast a warm glow over the streets. It felt like a perfect day to find joy in the simple things.

We made our way to a nearby park, the kind of place that felt straight out of a postcard—the air was fresh, filled with the sound of rustling leaves, and a chorus of giggles from kids playing in the distance. We found an empty bench under a big, old oak tree, and I was immediately grateful for its shade. Lexie plopped down next to me, her arm brushing against mine, a small touch that sent a wave of comfort through me.

We sat in a comfortable silence, watching the sky turn into a wild watercolor painting of purples and pinks. It felt like the world was putting on a show just for us. But honestly, I couldn't care less about the sky. For me, this sky was just a backdrop as Lexie remained the main figure in my eyes. The way her hair caught the golden light, each strand glowing like it had its own tiny sun, made it impossible to look away.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Lexie whispered, her eyes still on the horizon, totally oblivious to the fact that I hadn't taken mine off her for the past five minutes.

"Yeah," I said, my voice a bit too eager. "Beautiful." Real smooth, I know.

She turned to me with a grin that told me I was caught. "You know, you've been staring at me like I'm some rare species or something," she teased, giving me a playful nudge.

I felt my cheeks heat up faster than a kettle on full blast. I tried to laugh it off. "I'm just... trying to figure out what's going on in that mysterious head of yours."

Lexie's grin softened, her eyes searching mine for a second before she replied, "Honestly? It's just... today's the first time in a while I've had the time to actually appreciate things like this," she said softly, her smile turning a little wistful. "Life... everything."
