Yeonjun didn't sleep much either that night. He couldn't stop thinking about Beomgyu. He couldn't deny that he found Beomgyu annoyingly attractive, but he tried to shove those thoughts aside. He had a girlfriend after all.
The next day, he decided to pay her a visit, needing to discuss something important with her.
He walked through the halls of the University, his heart heavy with what he was about to say. He found her sitting on a bench in the courtyard, sketching in her sketchbook.
"Hey, Minjoo" he said, his voice lacking its usual confidence.
She looked up and smiled at him, setting her sketchbook aside.
"Hey, Yeonjunie" she replied in a cheerful tone. "What's up?"
"I need to talk to you about... something" he said, sitting down beside her on the bench. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for her reaction. "It's...it's kind of serious"
Minjoo studied his face, sensing the serious tone. She placed a hand on his knee.
"What is it?" she asked, her voice gentle.
Yeonjun took another deep breath, gathering his courage.
"My family...they made an arrangement with another wealthy family" he began, his voice strained. "Our families have been friends for a long time...and they've arranged our marriage"
Minjoo's eyes widened in surprise, her mouth falling open slightly. She sat motionless, her hand still on Yeonjun's knee, as if frozen by shock.
"Marriage?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"I didn't have a say in it" he said quickly, his gaze meeting hers. "I tried to convince them to call it off, but they're set on it. They're determined to go through with this partnership"
Minjoo withdrew her hand from his knee and stood up, her feelings hurt and confusion.
"So, you're just going to get married to someone you don't even love?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Yeonjun stood up as well, reaching out to touch her arm. "Minjoo.... I'm sorry" he said, his tone pleading. "I never wanted this. I love you, not some stranger they chose for me"
Minjoo pulled her arm away, tears welling up in her eyes.
"No, you don't get to say that" she snapped, her voice shaking with emotion. "If you really loved me, you would fight for us, Yeonjun. You would find a way to break this arrangement"
Yeonjun sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
"You think I haven't tried?" he said, his voice raising slightly. "My parents won't listen to me, and they have the ultimate say in this matter. It's not like I can just magically change their minds"
Minjoo's shoulders slumped, and she turned away from him, her voice laced with anger and sadness.
"So, what now? We're just supposed to end everything because of some stupid alliance your families have?"
Yeonjun's heart ached at the sight of her hurt expression. "I don't want to end things" he said, his voice hoarse. "But I don't see how we can go on like this, knowing my family won't allow me to be with you"
"You know what? Let's break up!"
Yeonjun's heart shattered at her words, his mind in turmoil.
"Minjoo..." he started, his voice choked with emotion. "Please..."
"We're over" she said firmly, her eyes locking with his.
Yeonjun wanted to protest, to beg her to stay with him, but he knew she was doing this right.
"I...I'm sorry" he whispered, his voice breaking. "Please, forgive me"
"Goodbye, Yeonjun..." Minjoo said quietly, her voice almost a whisper. And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving him standing alone in the courtyard, his heart heavy with the weight of their shattered relationship.
Yeonjun watched her go, his heart aching and his mind filled with turmoil. He should have fought harder for them, should have found another way to make their relationship work. But it was too late now. He had lost her, and it was all because of this stupid arrangement his family had forced upon him.
"Pathetic"
As Yeonjun stood there, stewing in his own frustration, he suddenly heard a scoff come from behind him.
Yeonjun's head jerked up, anger coursing through him, and he turned to see Beomgyu standing there, arms folded and an unimpressed look on his face.
"What do you want, Choi Beomgyu?" Yeonjun said, his voice laced with annoyance. The last thing he needed was to deal with Beomgyu's sarcastic remarks right now.
Beomgyu took a few steps closer and fixed Yeonjun with a critical gaze.
"Just couldn't help but notice you moping around looking all pitiful" he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Rough day?"
Yeonjun's jaw clenched, his fists clenching at his sides. "None of your damn business" he snapped, the anger bubbling up inside him.
"Aww, little Yeonjjunie is having a rough day. Did something happen? Did someone break up with you?" he taunted, feigning innocence.
The mention of the break-up stung, and Yeonjun's irritation flared even more. He stepped closer to Beomgyu, towering over him.
"You have no idea what I'm going through, so why don't you just shut your mouth?" he hissed, his voice tense.
"Oh, but I think I have a pretty good idea" Beomgyu said, his voice laced with false sympathy. "Let me guess, some poor girl couldn't handle your insufferable attitude anymore and finally realised she could do much better?"
"You have no idea what you're talking about" Yeonjun gritted through clenched teeth. "And I don't need your damn opinions or your sarcastic remarks right now. So why don't you just piss off?"
Beomgyu looked unfazed, his smirk still intact. "Oh, I think I hit a nerve" he said cheerfully. "Looks like someone's still hurting over his broken heart"
Yeonjun's fists clenched even tighter, his knuckles turning white. He wanted nothing more than to knock that smirk off Beomgyu's face.
"Shut your mouth, Beomgyu" he warned, his voice a low growl. "I don't need to listen to your bullshit right now"
Yeonjun couldn't deal with Beomgyu's motor mouth any longer. He shot him one final glare before turning and stalking off, his emotions a maelstrom of anger and frustration.
Beomgyu watched him go, a satisfied smirk on his face. He knew he had rattled Yeonjun's usually cool composure, and it gave him a twisted sense of pleasure.
