The day dragged on slowly, the udms finally released to check out their new bunks as the sun began to set.

Elliot complained about the squeakiness of his own bed, while Sam chuckled at the sight of Andres, whose backpack looked as if it weighed heavily on the rickety wooden frame.

"This mattress is really squeaky!" Elliot exclaimed. "Andres' looks like it's gonna break under his weight."

"Elliot, I think that's because Andres is wearing a bag full of bricks!" Sam snorted, observing the bunks' poor conditions.

"Oh yeah..." Elliot remembered, before his tone shifted slightly. "Do you think we can make this area look nice over time?" He asked quietly, observing the terrible state of the room.

"I'm sure we can," Sam smiled bittersweetly, Andres nodding along in agreement. "We might not have much, but I'm sure we can make something out of this place.." Despite their situation being less than ideal, they were determined to make the best of it, at least for now.

They paused as the girls flung the door open, returning from doing their hygiene. "Oh god what is that smell?" Pepper gagged, barely making it into the room.

"That my friend, is the smell of the dead mice and mold infesting this place.." Sam grinned, checking the ladder was secure before he hopped up on one of the top bunks.

"I don't think all of those mice were dead." Elliot cautioned, looking underneath the furniture.

"That's why I gave Nory the bottom bunk!" Sam smirked mischievously, earning a small smile from Andres who was tucking a weighted blanket onto his bed.

"Sam, that is so mean." Pepper snorted as she opened the window to let some fresh air in. "I like you already!"

The morning sun rose over Sage Academy, casting a brilliant glow across the horizon. Despite the early hour, the campus was abuzz with activity. Students filled the campus, attending their classes, while others hung around with friends to chat or sat completing homework and such.

But in the case of the UDMs, it was a different ball game entirely. Skriff, having woken them up early by screaming through the cabin door and banging on it until it nearly broke off, had informed them he had a surprise for them.

So currently, the five students were walking across the school grounds groggily, struggling to keep up with Skriff's fast hustle.

"Not that I care, but will we be having a class today?" Pepper questioned curiously, her normal hint of annoyance in her tone as she squinted her eyes from the sun.

"Class? You guys will rather sit in a classroom instead of getting out for a big surprise?" Skriff scoffed, not bothering to slow down from his fast pace for the teens.

"What kind of surprise?" Elliot pushed, a bit skeptical about what this big 'surprise' was.

Instead of answering Elliot's question, Skriff walked faster and swung the door of a small shack that looked like it could collapse any second, but contained a bunch of cleaning supplies, exposing some strong looking brooms lined up against the wall to the staring gaze of the UDM kids.

"Oh, just great!" Sam huffed, crossing his arms as he looked at the equipment.

"A-are those.." Nory stuttered, eyes popping out of her head.

"Surprise!" Skriff grinned widely, not quite grasping what was going on with her.

"Is she having a seizure?" Pepper whispered in confusion, watching the girl slip past everyone towards the brooms.

"I don't have a good feeling about this." Sam muttered, furrowing his brows together as he tried to comprehend what was up with Nory.

She slid through the group and took one of the brooms from it's position, holding it with wonder, feeling it's straws with her hands like it was something precious.

"She's losing it." Pepper shook her head, a judgmental look spread across her face.

When they thought it couldn't get any weirder Nory bolted past everyone to the flat terrain behind the shack, knocking Sam straight into Andres in the process.

The girl cheered ecstatically, putting the broom in between her legs and sprinting in the open area. She jumped into the air confidently, only to land flat on her ass.

"That looked painful!" Skriff shook his head as he peered down at Nory's squirming figure that was struggling to stand up from the bare field, picking up the broom beside her while the other four kids stared at Nory's stupidity with a questionable face.

"Extremely!" Nory muffled, heaved herself up eventually. "So, what did I do wrong? How do you fly that thing?" Nory puzzled, wiping the dirt off of herself.

"Uh, you don't, you sweep with it?" Skriff exclaimed, looking at her like she was dumb. "It's not a flying broom, it's a broom broom, for sweeping."

"I'm sorry but what exactly is the surprise part of this surprise?" Pepper pitched in, still groggy and tired of Nory's idiocy.

"I mean, Nory was surprised when she fell on her butt!" Elliot laughed, "Same with Sam and Andres!" He added, pointing to the two boys who were gently brushing their clothes off from Nory pushing them together, Elliott poorly attempting to get a high five from Pepper but getting rejected.

"She definitely surprised me when she plowed me over." Sam nodded, scrunching up his nose.

"It's a surprise because they're exciting new brooms. Come one, look at that high quality straw, you think that's not expensive?" Skriff points to the broom bristles, a smile on his face. "And hey, if it doesn't fly, it can still take you places.. like anywhere you see trash!" Skriff continued, taking a look at the sky as the teens growled in disappointment.

Groaning, they each grabbed a broom and split up to sweep different portions of the school.

Sam was sweeping down one of the paths when he noticed a familiar face lurking around. "Hey stranger, haven't seen you in ages." Sam grinned jokingly, locking eyes with Andres.

"Hey," He smiled a bit sheepishly, making his way over to the other boy.

"What's up with you, not excited about your high quality broom?" He teased playfully.

"No, I'm really pleased with it!" Andres snorted sarcastically, loosely clasping his fingers around it's handle.

"Who wouldn't be.. anyways, I'm sorry about elbowing you earlier." Sam scratched his neck with a shy smile.

"Don't worry about it, it wasn't your fault anyways!" Andres chuckled, shifting his pack over his shoulder.

"Do you not have major back problems from that thing?" He puzzled slightly, turning his focus to the way Andres is always shuffling his pack around. "You're literally wearing a backpack full of bricks all the time.. and it's a one shoulder bag to!"

"It's only a little bit uncomfortable, nothing I can't handle!" Andres scoffed softly, rolling his shoulders.

"That sounds like bullshit!" Sam huffed, glancing at the uncomfortable backpack.

As Andres was about to respond a loud screech was heard across the campus, catching their attention. "Oh god, what has Nory done now?" The boys looked at each other quickly before bolting down the cement pathway towards the ruckus.
