"I'm pulling up in the Uber." Marí's slight German accent chimed through the phone. That accent, had a lot of people fooled. To most people she is a sweet, German lady, who is smart, and versed in a variety of subjects.
She looks like a younger version of the character M, James Bond's superior in the Bond movies. People often comment on Marí's resemblance to her. The funny part is no one suspects that her life is similar to M's in many ways.
And it's not that she isn't a sweet person, she is. But beyond what most people see, she possesses vast powers that would boggle the minds of most of them, if they knew. She comes from a lineage of several psychically gifted matriarchs who passed those genetics down to her.
Marí's astute mother helped shape those powers and taught her how to keep them from the outside world. Marí taught me everything I know about staying under the radar.
Her IQ level is an impressive 132. While this is well known in the academic setting where she works, she just flashes her humble smile at everyone. After being under her wings for so many years, it is hard not to notice how extraordinary she is. I am one of the few people lucky enough to benefit from her mad skills.
Another thing that no one else knows is that she is eighty years old. She doesn't look a day over forty, and her brain is sharp as a tack. When you have supernatural gifts like Marí anything is possible. I am proud to present her to the world as my adopted mom. Essentially, she is that, and so much more.
"Marí, nice to see you." I greeted her, as her tiny four-foot-nine frame, walked up to my door. She had an overnight bag with her, which I knew better than to try and carry it for her.
I'd seen her little body shoot an M40 sniper rifle, and take down a group of people, so I knew that she didn't need any help carrying anything.
I learned this lesson when I attempted to carry her suitcase once. She informed me that unless you're a man or a hotel attendant, she can carry her own suitcase. She could lift a house, and more, if she wanted to.
Her overnight bag did beg the question, was she planning on staying the night? Whenever she made an appearance, I knew it was for a good reason. I suspect that it had something to do with what was going on.
She always knew when I needed her.
" I bet you are noticing that you are physically stronger ya?" She asked as she finished giving me a hug and made her way inside my condo.
"Actually yes, as of late I am feeling a lot stronger, the little drinks?" I asked, reflecting on the few times lately, where I was at a scene and my strength felt superhuman. I had to hold back or else I was going to do serious damage to the perp.
"It was time." Was all she said, as she placed her suitcase on the light bamboo floor of my foyer. She closed her eyes, and a moment of silence filled the room. This was the signal to be quiet as her brain scanned my house for spy bugs. She did this in every space that she entered, when we needed to have discussions, meant only for us.
One time we were in a hotel room in Paris, and as her mind scanned, she found a device planted on the back side of the small radio clock on the night stand. Not only did she remove it, but we went for a walk to discuss matters, just in case she missed other bugs planted in places her mind might have missed, she said. I couldn't imagine her brain missing, anything no matter how hidden something might be.
Later, Marí found out the spy bug was planted in all the rooms because hotel security was looking for jewelry thieves who were thought to be staying at the hotel. They stole millions of dollars' worth of jewelry from the downstairs jewelry store. Apparently, security missed them because it was later found out that the thieves stayed in the room before we did, under false names and disguises.
