The following day, Crystal could barely manage to get herself out of the Hospital Wing.

Madam Pomfrey refused to discharge her until she discovered the cause of Crystal’s symptoms.

Crystal had narrowly escaped having her blood drawn; the last thing she wanted was for someone to test it and find something unusual — like the fact that she wasn't exactly complete human, a truth that had to remain hidden.

Still, her scientifically-inclined mind couldn't help but whisper, It would be interesting to study my own blood...

After a few days now, she sat with Hermione in the library, trying to catch up on all the schoolwork she'd missed.

"So, you're going to host the Yule Ball?" Hermione whispered. "Professor McGonagall told us about it yesterday."

"It seems so," Crystal replied, scribbling down notes as she copied Hermione's homework. "The professors are going to help since it's my first time hosting one. Dumbledore thinks it’ll be good for my future to learn these sorts of things." She paused, her voice dropping to a murmur. "Not that I have much of a future..."

"What was that?" Hermione asked, looking up.

Crystal quickly recovered. "I asked if you had any requests for the ball — like a specific dish or type of music?"

"Hmm, I’m not sure yet..." Hermione mused. "Oh! You should give the House Elves a bonus for all their extra work."

Crystal stifled a sigh. They don’t even want to be paid, let alone get a bonus, she thought, but said, “Sure.”

"And they deserve at least a day off after the ball!" Hermione continued.

And who’s going to cook for hundreds of students the next day? You? Crystal wanted to say but bit her tongue. "Sure," she repeated.

"Oh! And wouldn’t it be nice if they had proper uniforms? Something clean and official to represent their work here?"

"Listen," Crystal cut in gently, her patience fraying with house elf talk all the time. "I didn't hire them—Dumbledore did. You might want to bring that up with him."

She instantly regretted even asking Hermione about her preferences. It wasn’t Hermione’s fault that she cared so much about fairness and equality for everyone, but Crystal knew better than to engage on this particular topic.

Just as Crystal was searching for an excuse to escape, she noticed Viktor Krum enter the library. His eyes lingered on Hermione for a few moments before finally meeting Crystal’s gaze. He nodded in greeting, and Crystal returned the gesture with a blank stare.
