The two boys finally reached their classroom, their argument still smoldering as they stepped into the room. Some students glanced up as they entered late and murmured amongst themselves, clearly taking note of their bickering.
Ms. Kim Jisoo, their teacher, sternly looked at them as they entered, clearly unhappy with their tardiness.
"Choi Yeonjun and Choi Beomgyu, may I have a word?" she said, her voice firm and authoritative.
Beomgyu and Yeonjun both tensed, knowing they were in for a scolding. They sheepishly made their way to the front of the classroom, where Ms. Kim stood looking at them with a stern expression.
Ms. Kim crossed her arms, her gaze flickering between the two boys.
"Late again, I see. Care to explain why you were not in class on time?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Beomgyu and Yeonjun exchanged a quick glance, their argument forgotten for the moment as they tried to come up with a plausible excuse. The truth - that they had been arguing in the hallway right up until they were late - was definitely not an option.
"Sorry, Ms. Kim" Yeonjun said, forcing a sheepish smile. "We got held up in the hallway and lost track of time. It won't happen again"
Ms. Kim raised an eyebrow at Yeonjun's explanation, clearly not entirely convinced. Her eyes flickered over to Beomgyu, waiting for his response.
Beomgyu cleared his throat, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Yeah, uh, what he said..." he muttered, unable to meet Ms. Kim's gaze.
Ms. Kim nodded, accepting their explanation but still displeased with their tardiness.
"Very well"Ms.kim said. "But since you were both late, I'm assigning you both to clean the classroom at the end of class as a consequence"
Beomgyu and Yeonjun both grimaced, not looking forward to the thought of having to stay after class to clean. But they didn't dare protest, knowing that it would only worsen their punishment.
"Yes, Ms. Kim" they both said in unison, trying to sound apologetic. As they returned to their seats, they shot each other a furtive glare, silently blaming each other for their current predicament.
The rest of the class went by slowly, both boys' minds preoccupied with thoughts of their impending detention and their still-unresolved argument. Every so often, one would shoot a sidelong glance at the other, each silently stewing in their own resentment and frustration.
[Time skipped]
As the class ended, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow through the classroom windows. The other students slowly filtered out of the room, leaving Beomgyu and Yeonjun alone with the mess that they had been tasked to clean.
"Great. Just great. Now we're stuck cleaning up this mess because of you"Beomgyu said, crossed his arms as he surveyed the state of the classroom.
"Oh, yeah? Me again? I seem to recall it being your fault we were late"Yeonjun said, his hands on his hips.
"You started the argument in the first place! You're the one who doesn't move out of my way" Beomgyu said, his voice rising with frustration.
"Please. You were the one who barged into me first. I was just minding my own business before you came along and bumped into me" Yeonjun rolled his eyes.
"Yeah right, like you were 'minding your own business'. You were the one standing in the middle of the hallway like an entitled prick. I just wanted to get past, and you acted like it was a personal affront"Beomgyu's jaw clenched, his fists balling at his sides.
