ELLIE HAD SPENT THE DAY WITH HER FATHER AFTER MAVERICK TOLD them that they were off for the day after what happened between Jake and Bradley.

The blonde was currently with her father in his study, she was explaining what had happened yesterday before she heard the door open.

Ellie turned in her seat to see Maverick walking in and she smiled softly, watching as he closed the door behind him.

"If you guys need a minute, I can leave," Ellie offered.

Maverick shook his head. "No, it's okay."

Ellie nodded, but stood up to let Maverick sit in her seat. The blonde walked over and leaned against the wall next to the door, crossing her arms as she watched Maverick and her father reunite.

"How's my wingman?" Maverick asked.

Her father laughed before he leaned over to type on his computer. I want to talk about work.

"Please, don't worry about me," Maverick replied. "What can I do for you?"

Her father pointed at the computer, causing Ellie to smile to herself.

"All right," Maverick sighed. "Well, Rooster's still angry with me about what I did. I thought eventually he would understand why. I hoped he'd forgive me."

There's still time.

"The mission is less than three weeks away," Maverick replied. "The kid's not ready."

      Then teach him.

"He doesn't want what I have to give," Maverick replied as her father grunted and waved him off. "Ice, please, don't ask me to send someone else to die. Please don't... Don't ask me to send him. Send me."

Ellie's eyes softened at Maverick's words, it was obvious that he still cared so much about Bradley. Maverick was just trying to protect him.

Her father reached over and typed on his computer again. It's time to let go.

Maverick took a moment to reply. "I don't know how. I'm not a teacher, Ice. I'm a fighter pilot. A naval aviator. It's not what I am, it's who I am. How do I teach that?"

"Even if I could teach it, it's not what Rooster wants," Maverick explained. "It's not what the Navy wants. That's why they canned me the last time. The only reason I'm here is you."

"If I send him on this mission, he might never come home. And if I don't send him, he'll never forgive me. Either way, I could lose him forever."

Maverick looked back at the computer screen. It's time to let go. "I know. I know."
