Hours after Perry's departure, the quiet of Smriti’s room was interrupted by a soft knock on the door. Harman and Jemi entered, their faces etched with concern. The dim light of the room cast long shadows, and Smriti, sitting on the edge of her bed, looked up with weary eyes.

Jemi was the first to speak, her tone laced with a mix of sympathy and worry. "Oh, Smriti, look at you. What have you done to yourself? You have a match today, big sis."

Smriti kept her head down, not trusting herself to speak. Harman, always the more reserved of the two, simply moved to Smriti's side and enveloped her in a warm, comforting hug. Smriti didn’t hold back her tears any longer; they flowed freely as she clung to Harman. Soon, Jemi joined the embrace, and the three friends held each other tightly, forming a comforting circle of support.

After a few moments, Harman pulled back slightly, but kept a reassuring hand on Smriti’s shoulder. “Smriti, you’ve fallen for her, haven’t you?”

Smriti nodded slowly, her voice barely a whisper. “But that is a mistake, Harry. I shouldn’t have.”

Harman shook his head, a gentle but firm resolve in his eyes. “No, Smriti, that’s not a mistake. She loves you too. I met her this morning. Trust me, the love in her eyes is undeniable.”

“But Harry,” Smriti began, her voice breaking, “you know what she said.”

Harman interjected softly, “That was a misunderstanding. Even you didn’t tell her where you were going. You kept it a secret. She has seen you in your vulnerable state, she was just being protective. She was jealous because she cares about you.”

Jemi chimed in, her tone matter-of-fact but kind. “And hey, jealousy only comes when someone has feelings, right? From what I’ve seen, Perry can’t stay away from you. She’s been trying her best to be there for you, despite everything.”

Harman nodded in agreement. “Smriti, you’ve finally found someone who loves you and stands with you. Don’t lose her. She’s the one you deserve, the one who makes you happy.”

Smriti looked between her two closest friends, her heart heavy with the conflict of her feelings. Harman’s and Jemi’s words began to sink in, the warmth of their support helping to clear the fog of her emotions. She took a deep breath, wiping her tears.

“You’re right,” Smriti admitted softly. “I may have overreacted. Perry... she’s done so much for me. She deserves a chance to explain, to make things right.”

Harman and Jemi exchanged relieved glances, their support unwavering. With their encouragement, Smriti finally felt a flicker of resolve. She would give Perry the opportunity to make amends, to show her that their bond was worth fighting for.

As evening approached, the RCB team gathered for their pre-match briefing. Smriti, her mind still tangled with her earlier revelations, approached the coach. “Sir, I’m not well. Could someone else captain for tonight?”

The coach nodded, understanding. “Alright, Smriti. You choose who you think is fit for the role.”

There was a moment of surprise as the team awaited Smriti’s choice. Many expected Sophie Devine to be picked as she was captain of her national side, and smriti usually picked her brain in the field for suggestions. However, to everyone’s surprise, including Perry’s, Smriti announced, “Perry, you are the captain for today.”

A murmur of excitement ran through the team, and claps of approval filled the room. Perry stood there, stunned and elated, her eyes widening in surprise. She managed a smile, saying, “I’ll try my best to fill your shoes.”

The cheer that followed was loud and supportive. As the preparations for the match began, Smriti’s thoughts were far from the excitement of the game. Her eyes constantly darted towards the door, where her nemesis from the past, Shruti Rana, would soon make her appearance. The upcoming match against the Gujarat team filled Smriti with a wave of nervous anticipation.

In the quiet sanctuary of the bathroom, Smriti stood in front of the mirror, her hands gripping the sink as she tried to steady her breathing. The reflection staring back at her was a mix of nerves and determination. The door creaked open, and Perry stepped in, sensing Smriti’s distress.

Without a word, Perry walked up to Smriti and gently wrapped her arms around her. The embrace was warm and reassuring, offering a sanctuary from the turmoil. Smriti leaned into the hug, feeling the tension of the day slowly melt away. The closeness of Perry’s body and the gentle rhythm of her breathing were a balm to Smriti’s frayed nerves.

Perry’s voice was soft but firm as she spoke into Smriti’s ear. “We’ve got this, Smriti.” Her hand rested gently on Smriti’s shoulder, a silent promise of support and understanding.

Smriti looked up, meeting Perry’s eyes in the mirror. They shared a smile, a fleeting moment of mutual reassurance and connection. The simple act of Perry’s embrace and the sincerity in her eyes were enough to give Smriti the strength she needed to face the match ahead.

As they pulled apart, Smriti felt a renewed sense of hope and determination. The night’s game against Gujarat was not just a test of skill but a testament to the resilience of her heart. With Perry by her side, she felt ready to face whatever came next, knowing she was not alone.
