I did happen to get sick and had to go on some anti-biotics for a week. James was such a sweetheart taking care of me after work. He pretty much moved in full time with me, which was good because Alex tended to stay away from the apartment when he was home. That didn’t stop him from getting his way with me while James was at work. Sick or not he was getting his fix and everytime he did, my feelings grew for him. This was a dangerous game we were playing. Of course I would give James the same treatment everynight as long as I didn’t get him sick, but after three days I wasn’t contagious anyway.
A few months after I was sick we visited my mother and we sat down at the table to eat dinner. She smiled and said “We set a date for the wedding!”
I looked up at my mother and said “Oh. When?”
“Next month!”
I relaxed and said “That’s wonderful ma.”
I wasn’t feeling very well. David looked at me and said “You okay?”
“Yeah. My stomach kinda hurts.”
My mother smiled and said “When was your last period?”
David threw down his fork and said “MA!”
I thought about it and said “I’m on the shot. I don’t get it for three or four months at a time.”
She nodded and said “You did have to go on that medication that week.”
“So?”
“Sweetheart the medication you were on renders birth control useless.”
I felt the blood drain from my face and tried to cover it up.
“I just had it last week and went in to renew my shot. They did say I would have some slight cramps.”
“Okay. Just take care of yourself.”
“I will.”
I barely ate and James’s phone rang. He excused himself and gave me a kiss. He walked out and I smiled.
“You seem happy sweetie.”
“I am. He’s the best.”
James came back and said “I have to go to the office.”
“Why?”
“An emergency at one of my hotels. It’s pretty urgent.”
I pouted and said “Okay. Be safe.”
He leaned in and kissed me.
“Get home safe. I’ll see you tonight.”
“Okay.”
He left and I sighed.
“Wow sis.”
“What?”
“You got over what’s his face quickly.”
I nodded and said “I figured he’s not worth my time and neither are any of my other ex’s.”
“You dated before him?”
“Yup but they mean nothing to me now. James is my one and only from here on out.”
I could feel Alexander glaring at me. I finished eating and said good night to everyone. I went home and went straight to bed.
The night of the rehearsal dinner was...interesting. I woke up feeling very sick.
“Bethany sweetie are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Just go get ready for your dinner.”
“Okay. We can postpone if you need me.”
I wiped my mouth and said “No mom. Go get ready. I’m sure I’ll feel better in a few minutes.”
