We went back to my mom’s house and told her what we wanted.

“You what?”

I smiled and said “We don’t want a huge wedding ma. You can plan a reception. That way we just have one big party when we get home. We can plan the reception for the next few months.”

She sighed and said “Are both of you okay with that?”

I looked at Alexander and said “If we could get married now I would be happy.”

He kissed me and I said “There’s no rule saying that we have to have the reception right after the wedding.”

My mother sighed and said “If you insist on doing this, at least do one thing.”

“What?”

“Wear my wedding dress from when I married your father?”

“Will it fit?”

She smiled and said “Believe it or not...I was your exact same size when I was your age and I married your father.”

“Really.”

“Really. But I think you have more up top than I do. I have the dress in my closet.”

“You just kept it in your closet after all these years?”

“Actually when Alex said he wanted to propose to you I dug it out of the attic and had it dried cleaned.”

She grabbed my hand and said “You stay here Alex. You can’t see the dress before the wedding.”

We went upstairs and she pulled it out the closet and unzipped the bag.

“Mom, it’s beautiful.”

She smiled and said “Well, the thing with this dress is it’s also a family tradition. Every bride who has worn it since world war 2 has added something to it to make it special to that bride. Your great grandmother was the first to wear it and she left it as it was. Your grandmother added these lovely lace sleeves. I added this lovely beading at the waist. Want to try it on?”

I nodded and put it on. I looked in the mirror and said “Mom, it’s perfect.”

“What are you going to add?”

I looked at it and said “What if I lower the sleeves and the neckline so it isn’t all the way up to my chin but a little off the shoulder? It’s small but noticeable.”

“I love it.”

We fixed the dress and I said “Now let me try it on.”

I did and said “It’s perfect.”

I looked at my mom and she smiled.

“Beautiful.”

I changed and went back downstairs.

“Score!”

I went into the living room and said “Malcom?”

He looked at me and said “Hey sweetie.”

I ran up and hugged him. He laughed and said “So...David called and caught us up on all the dirt! You're getting married to your ex step father?”

“Yeah.”

He gasped and punched my shoulder.

“Why didn’t you call?! We all need to go out!”

I smiled and said “Well-.”

Alexander stood up and said “I think it’s a great idea. Go have some fun with your friends.”

“You sure?”
