Deafening Silence

Every sound blurred out around him as Gaster frantically analyzed the various readings from the different monitors that are connected to her. His eyes glowed anxiously in various colors.

She was fading.

Alarming beeps echoed through the room as her vitals dropped into dangerous areas.
The line on the heart monitor spiked unevenly, the spikes becoming gradually slower and turning time into an agonizing eternity.

She was coughing uncontrollably and trembling.

Gaster lifted up her blanket, his hands hovering over her ribcage.
The room was dipped into a bright green light as he started healing her, desperately trying to stabilize her. He summoned all his strength and tried to reach the deepest parts of her soul, trying to reach her.

But there was something.

A resistance, a force that shut him out. It wasn't her.

Before he could grasp this force any further and identify it, a shockwave made Gaster stumble backwards a couple of steps.

For a mere second, he was caught off guard and slightly confused but he shoved those feelings away, quickly stepping up to her bed again to repeat the procedure.

Gaster blinked away the tears in his eyes that started to blur his vision and he quickly checked the heart monitor again.

"Please, don't give up on me. I can save you. I won't let you-"
A weak, gentle grasp around one of his hands pulled him out of his thoughts and he shifted his attention to his love in front of him.

She softly took his hand in hers and smiled at him as brightly as she could.

"It's okay, G... you can stop."

Her weak voice broke him inside.

"Stop? I How could I? You are my world. I can't live without you!", he exclaims, his voice breaking.
She could not understand what he said and he knew but one could feel his desperation and struggle to let her go.

Tears streamed down his face. He clasped her hand more firmly and let his healing magic seep into her once more through her skin.

But to no avail.

"Please, don't be sad. Even when I am not here anymore, I will always be with you."

Gaster shook uncontrollably as he sank to his knees beside her bed, still holding her hand tightly and cupping her beautiful face with the other.

He looked deeply into her eyes, which unwillingly fluttered open and shut.

He tried to burn the beautiful color of her orbs into his memory.

He tried to take in every little detail about her face - every freckle and beauty mark, the way her hair strands fell into her face and framed it beautifully and thinking how every feature about her made her the most beautiful woman in the entire world.

He felt the softness of her skin and the warmth she emitted and couldn't help but think how lucky he was to have found her.

That, despite everything he has done, he still deserved to have someone so wonderful and loving in his life.

"G...", she breathed out, her eyes tearing up. She looked at him with all the love and affection.

"I love you...so much."

A pang of pain tore through Gaster's heart and he scooted closer to nuzzle his face into her cheek.

"I love you so much too. I always will..."

A tear rolled down his cheek and he shut his eyes tightly, hoping this would all make it stop somehow.

.

.

.

His heart sunk as he felt her grip around his hand weaken and almost slip out of his grasp.

Gaster caught her hand and held it firmly, gently pulling her hand towards his face to kiss it, then pulling her whole body into a quick but tight hug before he let go of her.

Forever.

He gently laid her back down on the cushions and got back onto his feet.

He felt numb, a thousand thoughts coursing through his mind simultaneously.

Reluctantly, he pushed away all of these thoughts and feelings as he had no time to waste.

He made you a promise and the least he could do is keep it.

With trembling hands, he summoned her soul.
It was quivering slightly as it floated in front of him, lacking the energy from her body.

As he looked at her soul, he felt nauseous for a moment.

It felt wrong.

So extremely wrong.

Gaster quickly grabbed the capsule from the shelf, hesitating to guide her soul inside.

With a deep breath, he quickly moved it into the capsule and sealed it.

This container has been sitting empty on this shelf for a couple of weeks. For a brief moment, he had the hope that he would never have to use it.

And now he was here, holding her soul in his hands.

He mustered the strength to look at it up close. It peacefully levitated inside its glass prison, gently emitting a rhythmic [s/c] colored glow in a calming manner.

It is all that is left of her.

Now that he had the time to breathe, reality came crashing down on him.

The room was awfully quiet. It felt empty and dead. Gaster just stood there, the glass container firmly pressed against his chest. The silence was occasionally interrupted by his sighs and sobs. His shoulders trembled, his whole body felt weak.

She gave him a piece of her.

She placed all her hopes and dreams in him to try and free monsters from this prison.

He would rather grief and stare at her beautiful soul for the rest of his life - preferably for all eternity but he could not let her or anyone else down.

If her soul can help monsterkind, he would grant her wish and have her be remembered for her great sacrifice.

The only one who was left in his life who he truly cared about was Asgore and if he could help it, Gaster would not let him suffer - no matter the cost.

A single tear slipped from his cheek, dripping onto the container in his hands. Gaster looked down at it quietly. He wished so badly that he could just pretend this never happened. That all of this was just a nightmare and you would soon wake him up with a gentle kiss and that beautiful smile of yours.

His heart ached...but he would never have that again. He felt his own soul shatter into pieces, it felt difficult to breathe but he had to stay strong. For her.

I won't let you down...
