The Sulphur Springs High School football stadium was alive and roaring with energy on this fateful Friday night. Bleachers were packed full to the brim with crowds of roaring people, the school band was playing their instruments, and cheerleaders on both sides of the field were practicing their routines and cheering and chanting as loud as they could while they waved their pom-poms about.
To the north of the field housed the home team, the Sulphur Springs Harbingers, with their red, black, and white colors displayed everywhere while the guest team sat over to the south of the field.
Towards the high end of the bleachers sat 17-year-old Harper Dunn and three of her best friends, 15-year-old Zoey Campbell, 17-year-old Bailey Moody, and 16-year-old Nina Reid. The four girls sat together, taking funny selfies and engaging in mindless conversation while they waited for the game to start. But it wasn't just any game. Tonight was Homecoming, which meant that there was a lot riding on the team's shoulders, especially since some of them would be heading off to college next year.
After taking their tenth selfie that night, Nina leaned over to talk to the other girls so she could be heard over the combined noise of the school band and the cheerleaders.
"So, have any of you seen the guys yet?" she asked as she looked around. Harper and Zoey both shook their heads while Bailey just shrugged.
"No, they're still in the locker room. I think the coach is giving them all an extra-long pep talk since tonight is Homecoming," she answered nonchalantly.
"Perfect!!! Let's go get the jackets now then," Zoey said excitedly and the four girls jumped out of their spot on the bleachers and raced towards the edge of the field where the team's equipment was located at the gear shed by the concession stands.
After making sure the coast was clear, the four girls ran into the shed and began to dig through a whole bunch of sports equipment, such as water bottles, first aid kits, spare pieces of gear for practice and so forth. Finally, Nina pulled out a large box from the far left corner of the shed and the girls began to dig into it, pulling out a bunch of red and white varsity jackets.
"So, is it just me or does the cheer squad seem a little bit more bitchy then usual?" Bailey asked as she pulled out a jacket that was adorned with the number 42, which belonged to her boyfriend Malachi, and put it on, her hands not quite going all the way through the sleeves.
Zoey shook her head. "No, it's not just you, Bails. Malayjah probably told them everything by now," she answered solemnly, referring to an argument she'd had a few weeks earlier with Malayjah Dearing, who was one of the school's most popular "it" girls and the co-captain of the cheer squad.
"Yeah, well, she had it coming to her," Nina answered in agreement as she pulled out a large jacket that was emblazoned with the name "Reid" and the number 18, which meant that it belonged to her older step-brother, Holden, and quickly pulled it on before she resumed digging through the box.
