The Johnson house was unusually quiet as Sarah sat on the living room couch, clutching a photo of Lily in her hands. The image of her daughter's smiling face brought a fresh wave of tears, but she quickly wiped them away, determined to stay strong. She had to believe that Lily would be found that her little girl was somewhere safe, waiting to come home.
The sound of the doorbell broke the silence, pulling Sarah from her thoughts. She hesitated for a moment before getting up to answer it, her heart racing with the hope that it might be news about Lily.
When she opened the door, she was met by Detective Mike Stevens, who stood on the porch with a notepad in hand. His expression was serious but not unkind, a mixture of professionalism and genuine concern. Behind him stood another officer, taking in the surroundings.
"Mrs. Johnson," Stevens began, his voice calm,
"I wanted to update you on the investigation and ask you a few more questions."
Sarah nodded, stepping aside to let them in.
"Please, come in. I—" Her voice faltered, but she quickly composed herself.
"I'm ready to help in any way I can."
They followed her into the living room, where Sarah gestured for them to sit. Stevens took a seat in the armchair across from her, while the officer remained standing, his presence reassuring.
"We've expanded the search to include the entire town and surrounding areas," Stevens explained, flipping through his notepad.
"We're also reviewing security footage from nearby businesses and residences to see if we can find anything that might help us track down Lily's movements."
Sarah's grip tightened on the photo in her hands.
"Has anyone seen her? Or... or anything suspicious?"
Stevens shook his head, his expression regretful.
"Not yet, but we're following up on every lead. Right now, I need to ask you about anyone who might have had a reason to target you or your family. Have you had any disagreements, any conflicts with anyone?"
Sarah frowned, her mind racing as she tried to think of anyone who might hold a grudge.
"No... nothing like that. We've always gotten along well with our neighbors, and I can't think of anyone who would want to hurt us."
Stevens nodded, jotting down her response.
"What about your husband's death? Is there anything there that might be connected?"
The mention of Eric's death sent a pang through Sarah's heart, but she forced herself to stay focused.
"Eric... he died in an accident a few months ago. I never really got all the details, but it was a military-related incident. It was hard on us, but I don't see how it could be connected to Lily's disappearance."
The detective's pen paused on the page for a moment before he continued writing.
"We'll look into it, just to be thorough. In the meantime, we're setting up a tip line for anyone in the community who might have seen or heard something."
Just as Stevens was about to continue, the doorbell rang again. Sarah's heart leaped, and she quickly excused herself to answer it.
This time, it was Karen, her face lined with worry and sympathy.
"Sarah, I just heard that the police are here. I wanted to check on you and see if there's anything I can do."
Sarah's relief at seeing her friend was immediate.
"Karen, thank you. They're just asking some questions right now."
Karen stepped inside, giving Sarah a comforting hug.
"I'm here for you, whatever you need. I can help you go through Lily's things if you think it might help the investigation, or even just sit with you. Whatever you need."
Detective Stevens stood as Karen entered the room, acknowledging her with a nod.
"Mrs. Wilson, thank you for your support. It's important for Mrs. Johnson to have people she trusts around her during this time."
Karen smiled warmly at the detective, her hand resting gently on Sarah's shoulder.
"Of course. Sarah is like a sister to me, and Lily... well, I love her like she's my own. I'll do anything to help find her."
Stevens looked between the two women, sensing the deep bond they shared.
"Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Wilson, if there's anything that comes to mind—any detail, no matter how small—please let us know immediately. Sometimes it's the smallest things that can break a case."
"I will," Sarah promised, feeling a slight sense of comfort in Karen's presence.
The detective handed Sarah a card with his contact information.
"I'll be in touch as soon as we have any new information. In the meantime, try to get some rest."
As Stevens and the officer left, Sarah turned to Karen, her eyes pleading.
"I don't know how to rest when she's out there somewhere, Karen. I feel so helpless."
Karen guided Sarah to the couch, sitting down beside her.
"I know, Sarah. But you need to keep your strength up—for Lily. We'll get through this together, and we'll find her. I'll be right here with you, every step of the way."
Sarah leaned into Karen's embrace, grateful for her friend's unwavering support. But as she closed her eyes, trying to muster the strength to face another day without Lily, a nagging doubt crept into her mind. Something about Karen's calm reassurances, about her constant presence, didn't sit right with her, but she quickly pushed the thought away, blaming it on her exhausted, overworked mind.
