Lucy sat in the dimly lit room; her eyes glued to the old files scattered across her desk. The air was thick with the scent of dust and aged paper, and the only sound was the faint hum of the ceiling fan above. She had spent countless hours poring over every detail, every scrap of information she could find about Mike Stevens and Karen Wilson. The deeper she delved, the more the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place, revealing a connection she had never expected.

Mike Stevens had always been an enigma, a man who kept his personal life shrouded in mystery. Even during their brief interactions at the precinct, Lucy had found him hard to read, his demeanor cool and detached. But there was something else about him that had always nagged at her, something she couldn't quite put her finger on—until now.

A stack of marriage certificates lay in front of her, the ink faded but still legible. One certificate, in particular, had caught her eye. The names printed on it sent a shiver down her spine: Michael Stevens and Karen Wilson. They had been married years ago, long before anyone in town knew them as separate individuals. The marriage had been short-lived, ending in a quiet divorce not long after the birth of their child—a child who had been taken from them by Child Protective Services due to Karen's unfit condition.

Lucy's mind raced as she connected the dots. The timing of the marriage, the birth of the child, and the subsequent divorce all aligned with the timeline of Karen's downward spiral. The baby, taken away at the hospital, had been the catalyst for everything—Karen's obsession, her hatred, and ultimately, her desire for revenge.

But why had Mike stayed in town? Why had he continued to work so closely with Karen, even after their divorce? The questions gnawed at Lucy, the answers just out of reach.

She leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples as she tried to piece together the puzzle. The divorce papers had been quietly filed away, buried under layers of bureaucracy. It was as if they had wanted to erase any trace of their past together, to hide their connection from prying eyes. But now, that hidden past was coming to light, and with it, a terrifying realization.

Lucy's thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. She glanced up to see her partner, Officer Daniels, standing in the doorway. He had been assisting her with the investigation, though he had no idea how deep it truly ran.

"Got something for you," Daniels said, holding up a manila folder.

"It's the financial records you asked for."

Lucy took the folder, her hands trembling slightly as she opened it. The records were detailed, listing every transaction, every deposit, and withdrawal made by Mike and Karen over the past few years. At first glance, nothing seemed out of the ordinary—until she noticed a series of large cash withdrawals made by Mike, starting around the time of their divorce.

Her eyes narrowed as she examined the records more closely. The withdrawals were frequent, the amounts substantial, and each one had been made just before Karen had gone on one of her so-called "trips." It was as if Mike had been funneling money to Karen, supporting her in some way even after they had officially parted ways.

But why? What was the connection that had kept them tied together, even after their marriage had ended?

As Lucy continued to dig through the records, a chilling thought crossed her mind. What if the divorce had been a façade? What if Mike and Karen had orchestrated the whole thing to throw people off their trail, to make it seem as if they had gone their separate ways when, in reality, they were still working together?

The thought sent a shiver down Lucy's spine. If Mike and Karen had been secretly collaborating all this time, what else were they hiding? And more importantly, what role had Mike played in Lily's disappearance?

Her heart pounded in her chest as she flipped to the last page of the financial records. There, at the bottom of the list, was a single transaction that made her blood run cold. It was a payment—large, anonymous, and made to a private investigator. The date of the payment was only a few weeks before Lily had gone missing.

Lucy's mind raced as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing. A private investigator? What had Mike and Karen been looking for? Or, more disturbingly, who had they been looking for?

The realization hit her like a ton of bricks. Mike and Karen had been planning something, something that involved Lily. But what was it? And why had they gone to such lengths to cover their tracks?

Lucy stood up abruptly, her chair scraping against the floor as she gathered the files and shoved them into a bag. She had to get to Sarah, to tell her everything she had uncovered. There was no time to waste—every second counted.

But as she reached for her keys, a sudden thought stopped her in her tracks. What if someone was watching her? What if Mike or Karen had been keeping tabs on her investigation, waiting for the moment when she got too close?

The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end as she realized the danger she was in. She was no longer just investigating a case—she was a target.

With a deep breath, Lucy steeled herself and walked out of the room, her mind made up. She would go to Sarah, tell her everything, and together they would find Lily. But she would have to be careful, more careful than she had ever been in her life.

As she drove through the dark streets, the weight of the truth settled heavily on her shoulders. Mike and Karen were more dangerous than she had ever imagined, and the evidence she had uncovered pointed to something far more sinister than she had originally thought.

The chapter ended with Lucy pulling up to Sarah's house, the shadows of the night creeping closer as the full scope of Mike and Karen's twisted plot began to reveal itself. Lucy knew one thing for certain: this was only the beginning, and the worst was yet to come.
