Sarah paced back and forth in her living room, the walls closing in on her as the weight of the past weeks threatened to crush her. Sleep had become a distant memory, her mind too consumed with worry, fear, and an ever-growing suspicion. She had trusted Karen with her life, with her daughter's life, but now, doubt gnawed at the edges of her sanity.

The memory of her recent visit to Dr. Reynolds, Karen's doctor, played over and over in her mind. She had gone there under the guise of seeking support, but the conversation had taken a turn she hadn't anticipated. Dr. Reynolds, a kind man with a gentle demeanor, had spoken of Karen's struggle to have a child—a struggle Sarah had known about but never fully understood until that moment.

"Karen's been through a lot," Dr. Reynolds had said, his voice laced with empathy.

"She's tried multiple rounds of artificial insemination, but... it just wasn't meant to be. Each failure took a toll on her. I remember the last time she was here, she was more determined than ever, but when the results came back negative again, I could see something break inside her."

Sarah had listened, her heart aching for her friend, but as the doctor continued, something else had caught her attention—a small, almost throwaway comment.

"After that, she stopped coming in. Said she needed a break, some time to think. She mentioned wanting to take a trip, to clear her head."

A trip? Sarah had never heard of this. Karen had never mentioned any trip, any time away to clear her mind. In fact, Karen had been more present than ever in Sarah's life, especially after Eric's supposed death. The timeline didn't add up, and the discrepancy gnawed at Sarah.

Sarah sat down at the kitchen table, spreading out the notes she had been compiling. Each page was filled with details, observations, and timelines, but it was the new information about Karen's so-called trip that now held her attention. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, that Karen had been hiding more than just her failed attempts at motherhood.

Her fingers trembled as she picked up the phone, dialing a number she hadn't used in a while. The phone rang twice before a familiar voice answered.

"Sarah? Is everything okay?"

It was Rachel, an old college friend who had once been close to both her and Karen. Rachel had moved away years ago, but they had kept in touch sporadically.

"Rachel, I need your help with something," Sarah said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"It's about Karen."

"Karen? What's going on?"

Sarah hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal.

"I've been... I've been looking into some things. Karen mentioned taking a trip a while back, around the time she was dealing with... some personal stuff. Do you know anything about that?"

There was a pause on the other end, and when Rachel spoke again, her voice was cautious.

"I remember Karen mentioning something about needing to get away, but I don't think she ever did. At least, not in the way you're thinking. She did come to visit me for a weekend, though. This was a couple of months after she stopped talking about the insemination treatments."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat.

"She visited you? Did she say why?"

"She said she just needed a change of scenery, but... Sarah, now that you mention it, she was acting really strange. She seemed anxious, distracted. And there was something else—she kept talking about a baby, but not in the way you'd expect. It was more like... she was obsessed."

An icy chill ran down Sarah's spine.

"Obsessed? Obsessed how?"

"She kept saying that someone had taken something from her, something precious, and that she had to find a way to get it back. At the time, I thought she was just talking about her struggles, but now..."

Rachel's voice trailed off, the implication hanging heavy in the air.

Sarah felt a wave of nausea wash over her. The pieces were starting to fit together, forming a picture she didn't want to see but could no longer ignore. Karen had been hiding something—something dark and twisted.

"Rachel, I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest with me," Sarah said, her voice trembling.

"Do you think Karen could... do you think she could have done something... something to Lily?"

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening, and when Rachel finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I don't know, Sarah. But after everything she said, I think... I think you need to be careful."

Sarah hung up the phone, her hands shaking as she processed what she had just learned. Karen's obsession, her strange behavior, the trip that never really happened—it all pointed to something sinister.

Sarah glanced at the clock. It was late, but she knew she wouldn't sleep until she followed up on this new lead. She grabbed her keys and headed out the door, determined to find out the truth about Karen, no matter where it led her.

As she drove through the dark, empty streets, Sarah's mind raced with possibilities. What had Karen done? And more importantly, where was Lily?

The clue about Karen's past had opened a door Sarah wasn't sure she was ready to walk through, but there was no turning back now. She was closer than ever to the truth, and nothing would stop her from finding her daughter.
