But it never hit him.

The female scientist, Madeline had blocked the bullet's path. She held up her own gun and shot Devon before collapsing to the ground. The bullet had landed in a nonlethal place, but it still really hurt.
"Go!" Madeline shouted. "The exit is right there! Devon won't be able to stop you," Devon was on the floor as well, clutching his wound and glaring at Madeline.

"Thank you.", Matt muttered, although he meant it. Madeline smiled despite her

pain.

Matt yanked Lilith on the ground and they both bounded in the direction that

Madeline had pointed. The were met with a giant hatch that you would only see in Sci-Fi movies. Next to it was a big red button that said USE AS EMERGENCY EXIT ONLY. Lilith exclaimed, "Well this classifies as an emergency!". Then a frazzled looking Dr. Devon caught up with them and yelled,

"WAIT! Take me with you!" He kneeled down before them and begged, "You can't lock me out! Please." Lilith smiled.

"You won't stay here forever." she said to him sweetly.

"Really?" he said.

" We'll make sure that the police pick you up after."

"It's nothing personal," Matt said in the same false tone. "But you are a psycho who deserves to rot in prison for the rest of your natural life.", he said, dropping the sweet voice.

Lilith opened the door.

"Are you ready?" she asked Matt.

"Yes, and I think the doctor will be alright." Matt said.

"Actually, not at all," he said walking through the door. Lilith followed, and cast a wistful smile at Madeline. Maybe after they contacted the police, they could save Madeline. She would probably be permanently injured, but at least she would have her life. With hopes for the future, Lilith walked through the door and into the bright, welcoming light.
