“You are going to marry Raghuveer, Siya.”

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard, what they expected of me. My voice cracked as I whispered, barely able to get the words out, "How could you...how could you do this to me?" I took a step back, my hands shaking uncontrollably, and the tears I had been holding back finally spilled over. "How could you..." I kept repeating, as if saying it enough times would make it all make sense.

Arun uncle stepped forward, his voice soft and full of something I couldn’t understand—regret, maybe? "Siya…”

But I couldn’t bear to hear him out. I turned and ran, the tears blurring my vision. I heard Yashi calling out to me, but I didn’t stop. Yashi came near me shutting the door. I threw myself onto the bed, sobs ripping through me, each one harder than the last.Yashi sat beside me , her hands gently stroking my hair as tears silently rolled down her own cheeks.

"Why is this happening, Yashi?" I cried, clutching her hand. "I can’t understand anything. Why me? Why me, always?”

We stayed like this for a while, after some time I whispered, "Chal, hum wapis chale jate hain, Yashi. Hum nahi rahenge yahan aur.”

Yashi looked at me, "Haan, Siya. Hum kal subah hote hi chale jayenge wapis. Thik hai? Tu shaant ho ja abhi, please... Aaja mere saath." She pulled me up gently and led me to the washroom. My whole body was trembling, but Yashi stayed by my side, washing my tear-streaked face and handing me the medicine I almost forgot to take.

We woke up early, neither of us saying much as we packed our bags. There wasn’t really anything to say. But when I opened the door, I found Arun uncle standing there, looking like he hadn’t slept at all. His voice was rough, and I could hear the exhaustion in it. "Kahin jaa rahi ho?”

I just stayed silent, Yashi, ever protective, answered for me, "Haan, hum wapis jaa rahe hain.”

He looked at me. "Thik hai, chale jaana. Bas mujhe kuch waqt dedo tumse baat karne ke liye, beta…”

I glanced at Yashi, silently asking her what I should do. She gave me a small nod and then quietly left, leaving us alone. Arun uncle stepped into the room, holding a small, worn box in his hands. I didn’t say anything, didn’t even look at him directly. I was too angry, too hurt. His voice was gentle, almost pleading. "Mujhe pata hai tum bahut naraaz ho mujhse, par beta, mujh par vishwas karo. Main kabhi tumhare saath kuch bura nahi hone dunga. Wo log acche log hain…”

I couldn’t help it—I scoffed. I didn’t want to hear any of this. He sighed and opened the box, handing it to me. Hesitantly, I took it, unsure of what to expect.

"Yeh box tumhari maa ke room se mila tha, beta," he said, watching me closely.

I opened the box slowly, inside were old photographs and some folded papers. My hands shook as I picked up a picture. It was my parents with Angad uncle and Archana aunty, all of them smiling, looking so happy together. My fingers trembled as I reached for the notes. I recognized the handwriting immediately—it was my mother’s.

As I began to read, tears welled up in my eyes again. The notes were filled with my mother’s dreams and hopes, her wish for our family to become closer through my marriage to the Shastri's elder son, Raghuveer. This wasn’t just an arranged marriage; it was her dream, her deepest wish.

"Your parents always wanted you two to get married, beta," Arun uncle’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I looked up at him, my tears falling freely now. His hand reached out to gently squeeze my shoulder. "I hope you will do this for them, Siya... They loved you more than anything, and this is what they always dreamed of.”

"I’ll leave you alone now. The decision is all yours, beta." And with that, he quietly left the room.

I looked down at the notes in my lap, my mother’s words blurring as the tears streamed down my face. I wanted to scream, to run away from all of this, but how could I? How could I turn my back on my parents’ last wish?

I hugged the notes tightly to my chest, sobbing as the weight of the decision pressed down on me. After a while, Yashi came back into the room.

I looked up at her, my voice shaky but resolved. "Maine faisla kar liya hai”.

Yashi asked, “kya chahti hai tu.” I informed her everything. She was reluctant at first, we argued for hours. But, she finally understood where am coming from and assured, "Thik hai, Siya. Jo bhi faisla legi, main tere saath hoon.” We hugged each other tightly.

I came downstairs, my heart pounding again, but this time with a sense of
purpose.Everyone was at the dining table, and as I entered the room, all eyes turned towards me. Arun uncle looked up and came near me.

Before he could say anything, I spoke, my voice steady.

"I’m ready to marry him.”

Arun uncle’s face broke into a relieved smile, and he hugged me tightly. "Thank you, beta... thank you." He was genuinely happy unlike me. Sanjay bhaiya, on the other hand, looked furious. He glared at me before storming off to his room, slamming the door behind him.

Jaya maasi and Sayesha were both stunned, their faces a mix of surprise and disbelief. But before anyone else could react, Arun uncle pulled out his phone, clearly eager to make the necessary arrangements.

As soon as he was out of sight, Jaya maasi grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin. "Ae ladki, chup chap is shaadi ke liye mana kar abhi, warna aisi haalat karungi tumhari ki sapne mein bhi nahi socha hoga tumne!”

I struggled to free myself from her grip. Yashi tried to intervene, biting Jaya maasi’s hand. She yelped in pain, finally letting go of me, “ooi maa mar daala re”, but before she could retaliate, Arun uncle returned.

"Siya beta, kal subah hume unke haveli jana hai. Tayyar rehna, thik hai? Tumne ye faisla lekar bahut sahi kiya, beta." He blessed me and then headed to his room, with Jaya maasi following him, still fuming.

Sayesha walked up to me, her eyes full of malice. "What do you think you’re doing, huh..you bitch? You think you can trap an ameer ladka like Raghuveer and I’ll just stand by and watch? Raghuveer sirf mera hai, samjhi?”

Yashi stepped in front of me, glaring at Sayesha. "Dare you abuse my best friend again, and you’ll regret it.”

Sayesha knew better than to mess with Yashi, so she stomped off, her parting words hanging in the air.

My mind was a whirlpool of emotions—anger, sadness, confusion. But underneath it all, there was a deep, aching sense of duty. I was determined. I had made up my mind. I was going to fulfill my parents’ wish, no matter what.
