Siya stood still, staring at the towering gates of the house she once called home. The memories were faint, but the feeling was undeniable—this place no longer felt like home.
She and Yashi exchanged a glance, sensing the same eerie discomfort. As they stepped inside, a figure emerged from the shadows of the entrance. Arun Sharma, Siya’s uncle, stood there, a mix of joy and sorrow evident in his eyes. His voice quivered with emotion as he exclaimed, “Arey meri bacchi aa gayi…!” He was really happy seeing her after all these years.

“Namaste, Mausa ji,” Siya greeted, touching his feet.Yashi followed suit, “Namaste, Uncle.”Arun’s face softened with a smile as he blessed them both, “Khush raho, bachon. Aane mein koi takleef to nahi hui?”
Yashi shook her head, “Nahi, Uncle. Everything was fine.”As Siya stepped into the house, her eyes wandered around, noting the subtle changes. Her mind was busy piecing together the transformation when a cold voice sliced through the air.
“Oh, so the queen decided to show her face finally,” came Jaya’s harsh words as she walked into the room, her eyes narrowing with disdain. “Busy whoring around, were you?”
Siya’s breath hitched, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Yashi’s hand. Yashi responded by rubbing her thumb gently across Siya’s knuckles, trying to calm her without drawing attention. The sting of her aunt’s words was familiar but no less painful.
Arun’s voice boomed in anger, “Jaya, have you lost your mind? She has just arrived, and you’re already spewing poison? Kuch to sharam karo!”
But Jaya dismissed him coldly, “Oh, now it seems you’ve found your voice, haven’t you? Don’t forget everything you have is because of my father. Don’t you dare stand against me.”
Arun’s brief show of defiance crumbled under her words. He stood silently, his shoulders slumping in defeat. Siya felt a pang of sadness for her uncle, a man who had once been full of dreams, now reduced to a mere shadow of himself.
She forced herself to speak, her voice barely above a whisper, “Which room should Yashi and I stay in?”
Arun’s eyes met hers, a flicker of warmth amidst his troubled gaze. “Of course, your room, beta. I’ve made all the arrangements there. You both can go and settle in.”
With a grateful nod, Siya and Yashi picked up their bags and made their way upstairs. As they passed by Jaya, the hateful glare in her eyes was impossible to miss. Siya felt it like a burn on her back, but she didn’t turn around. Not here, not now.
Once inside her room, Siya began unpacking in silence. Yashi, sensing the tension, asked, “What was that all about?”
Siya paused, her fingers tracing the edge of the suitcase as she recalled the twisted family dynamics. “My nanu was a businessman. My mom was his eldest daughter, then Jaya maasi. When nanu died, his business was supposed to be divided equally between them. But my mom wasn’t interested in it. She was happy with her life. Jaya maasi pressured her to give up her share to Arun mausa ji, who had no interest or knowledge in business. He wanted to be a writer. But maasi pushed him into the business, and they’ve been running into debts ever since.”
Yashi’s eyes widened as she processed the information. “Bhai saab, teri maasi to Komolika ki bhi maa nikli yaar…” she quipped.
Siya chuckled.
The conversation dwindled as they focused on settling in. After a quick shower, they headed downstairs for dinner. The atmosphere at the dining table was suffocatingly tense. Arun sweated nervously, and Jaya kept sending him silent, pointed looks. Siya noticed it all, her discomfort growing with each passing minute.
When the meal was finally over, Siya cleared their plates and washed them, a familiar routine that brought a semblance of normalcy. Yashi had already gone up to the room, likely fast asleep by now. As Siya finished up in the kitchen, she heard Jaya’s voice raised in anger.
Initially she thought of ignoring them but her intuition made her stay there. She heard Arun whispering Calm down Jaya sun legi wo...Jaya said are you even in your senses wese bhi kal to Pata chal hi jayega usse...when are you going to tell that girl.
Arun’s voice was a low whisper, “I’ll tell her tonight.”
Siya’s heart raced. Were they talking about her? What could they possibly be hiding? The fear gnawed at her, and before she could be discovered, she hurried back to her room. Her mind raced with possibilities, each one worse than the last. She knew something was wrong, but…What?
