Vegas looked at Phayu, who sat sipping a cup of coffee and reading a book that he had taken off Vegas's own expansive collection. His tiny little smiles from time to time made it evident that he was in his Draugs's head, and that Rain was upto no good. Vegas smiled. Rain had always been the most precocious of the fledgelings. When what they had put down to ADHD had become an unbelievable reservoir of power, it had taken all of them by surprise. But somehow, Vegas knew that Phayu had not been as surprised. "Did you know Rain did not have ADHD?" he asked. Phayu looked up, smile still dancing on his face. "I guessed. He was far too intelligent and seemed to be very different when he was in front of you, and when he was alone with us," Phayu said.
"Even in our wildest dreams we did not think of that. Rain was always the more handful of the four of them, throwing tantrums and letting off steam in the unlikeliest of situations. Some days, it was like playing with fire," Vegas said, staring into space, and Phayu understood that his father was looking back at some Rain moments in his head. "You didn't get him tested?" he asked. "Tharn and Type did, and he had above average IQ, but almost no EQ. We don't really get human diseases, so we don't really have doctors. And these boys did not really begin to see the world till they were around 4, when they were almost kidnapped. Human doctors couldn't understand what was wrong with him. And the teachers in school could not control him either," Vegas said. "To be honest, we have never seen Rain quite the way he is with you." Phayu and Vegas looked towards the door as Pete sauntered in, a grin on his face at the blush on his son's face.
He settled comfortably on the couch beside his husband and leaned against him. "Tell us about yourself na lu? We missed so many years of being together with you. It feels like we were cheated on," he said, suddenly choking. Vegas stroked his back, knowing exactly how Pete was feeling. Phayu thought for a minute as to what he should say. He could feel Rain curling like a kitten in sunlight in the back of his mind, as if waiting for his words, all shenanigans forgotten, and Phayu realised that so many things had happened in the last few days that he hadn't really gotten the time to talk to his parents or his mate. He drew in a deep breath. These were the three people in the core of his heart. His brothers knew most, is not everything, about him. But these two men in front of him, men who had given birth to him, and the one in his mind, his very soul, deserved to know everything about him.
"Well, as you know, when the humans and vampires went to war, staking, beheading, and all the gory details that I would like to skip for now, Pakin found me in a rubble of a human home, most likely one that belonged to servants of the family. He said he saw 'potential' in me, and in a way recruited me to be an enforcer. I started training at the age of seven. I was nine when the other three were found. They were the same age as me, but they seemed years younger, their innocence intact. I felt an immediate kinship with Pai, and when our surnames matched, we realised that we were blood kin of some kind. But every day, staying together, be it work, training, eating, anything at all, we all became closer and closer. I am sure you understand that. We were a covenant against a common enemy, hoping that we could rid the world of them." Vegas and Pete nodded and that, and Phayu could feel Rain's agreement as well.
