CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
It's well after sun-up now, and most of the group is awake. Theo and Malia went for firewood while Daryl and Merle were hunting, so they've eaten already, and saved some food for Luna, Carl, and Michonne when they come out of the car where most of them took turns sleeping.
Derek and Braeden are keeping the fire going while keeping it from getting too big, and Peter's sitting close to the fire. Derek had to separate him and Andie a couple times already this morning, so she's avoiding the small circle around the flames.
After taking a second to listen to their surroundings and make sure no walkers are getting too close, Andie walks over and sits on the ground next to Daryl. He's leaning against the side of the car, and she sits with her back against the tire. "Hey." She leans over and nudges his shoulder with her own.
"Hey." He glances at her, pausing a moment before taking the bottle she has in her outstretched hand. "Thanks."
"Don't thank me, it's technically yours." She tells him. "Theo and I went back to the mortuary the morning after we were all chased off. I found it in your coffin."
"You guys went back?" He asks, and she nods.
"He and I circled back, yeah. Merle said he and Luna went up a tree for safety, so we didn't see them when we ran into the woods. Theo had to pull me out of the street." She glances at him before returning her stare to the dirt in front of them. "I wanted to wait for you, go after the car that took Beth and Zoe, but we couldn't stay there. There were walkers closing in, and those guys had already shot at us."
"I thought I heard a gunshot, then I heard Zoe scream your name." He looks at her. "I thought you were dead."
"I'm not that easy to kill."
"But people have tried." Her uncle chimes in.
"Shut up, Peter."
"What happened that night?" Daryl asks. "Who was in the car?"
"I don't know." Andie shakes her head as she looks back at him. "Luna was scared, and she wouldn't let go of Zoe. Beth was trying to help Merle kill the walkers, but her ankle was so messed up. And Theo hadn't made it out of the mortuary yet. I got there, and Merle and I were killing walkers... The next thing I know, there are men in police uniforms trying to take the girls."
"Cops?"
"Ain't nobody's a cop anymore." Merle says. "Ain't that right, Officer Friendly?"
"Shut up, Merle." Rick glances at him.
