Chapter 64 The Suicide Squad
Feng Xiran hurried forward, lost in thought. From a distance behind her, she heard the sound of horse hooves. Looking back, she saw Jing Sa and the others approaching.
Her face brightened. She waited briefly for them, and then they all proceeded toward Yuwang Village, remaining silent and quickly advancing.
As they neared Yuwang Village, the ground was muddy with numerous shallow and deep puddles.
The horses' hooves sank into the mud, and it took a while to pull them out. The horses and their riders were covered in mud, with some of the guards unsteadily falling off and rolling in the dirt.
Feng Xiran and her group asked how far it was, and then dismounted. She handed the reins to the accompanying guards, leaving a few people to watch the horses while the others waded through the mud.
The more they walked, the worse it became, with mud making the journey even more difficult. Feng Xiran took off her boots, carried them in her hands, and reminded others to be careful of the stones underfoot.
As they walked further, the ground was increasingly covered with stones. Feng Xiran could only clean the mud from her feet with a handkerchief and put her boots back on.
She looked up at the surrounding mountains, which seemed unstable, and felt there might be further risks.
She instructed Fei Shuang to hurry ahead and check the situation.
"Fei Shuang, is it just up ahead?" When Fei Shuang returned, Feng Xiran asked about the current situation.
It was indeed very bad. Because the incident had occurred in the middle of the night, many people had not had time to escape. Half of the village was buried, and the few who had managed to escape were organizing the remaining villagers for emergency aid.
Some villagers, who had narrowly escaped death, were hurriedly packing their things to flee to other places.
Feng Xiran frowned. The instinct to survive in desperate situations is to flee.
She looked back at the guards, officials, and the county magistrate and prefect who were trailing behind, gasping for breath and needing support.
Without modern rescue tools, they had only knives, swords, and what might be twisted iron tools from the villagers. They needed to act quickly to retreat and save as much as possible before a secondary disaster.
"You all have a general idea of the situation. I'll give you an incense stick's worth of time to think. When we get there, we need to form two teams: one suicide squad to stay and help dig out the villagers, and the other to relocate the injured villagers."
The simple words made the accompanying guards and officials feel uneasy.
Everyone looked at each other, unsure.
Feng Xiran didn't pay much attention to their thoughts and focused on reaching the scene quickly.
Upon arrival, the scene was one of wailing. The injured magistrate was too preoccupied to change clothes, wearing the same muddy and sweaty outfit from the previous night, covering his head and organizing rescue efforts.
Seeing Feng Xiran and her group arrive, he was overwhelmed with tears.
"We don't know what we did to offend the heavens to bring about such a disaster." While covering his head, he wiped away tears, his face smeared with mud and blood, looking both heartbreaking and shocking.
Feng Xiran urgently asked Yao Xiang to check his forehead injury.
"It's nothing, it's nothing." He tried to downplay it while enduring the pain and waving his hand as Yao Xiang bandaged his forehead.
