Chapter 95 Hailstorm

Feng Xiran gripped the dagger tightly in her hand, staring ahead, ready to strike.

"Stop, stop! It's me!" The person on the other side yelled, wiping their face with a sleeve.

Recognizing the familiar voice, Feng Xiran peered out and let out a sigh of relief before punching the newcomer on the shoulder.

The others approached, their faces finally clean from the dust, revealing that it was Xue Chenxi and a few others.

Xue Chenxi rubbed her shoulder, grimacing in pain while trying to soothe the spot.

People leaving the city glanced over at them but quickly moved on. Those traveling by carriage sped ahead, while people walking like them had no interest in getting involved in unnecessary matters.

Feng Xiran and her group reached a quieter spot to rest, and they began exchanging information about what had happened earlier.

The trees by the roadside seemed affected by the disaster, some leaning and blocking the path.

"Should we return to the city or head back to Tianfeng?" Xue Chenxi couldn't help but ask as more and more refugees fled to the outskirts.

They looked at the sky and found a tree to rest under. Jing Sa offered to find some food for Feng Xiran, and the group split up.

After searching for half a day, they found nothing, their stomachs growling with hunger.

Many refugees had gathered near the moat(T/n: moat - a deep, wide ditch surrounding a castle, fort, or town, typically filled with water and intended as a defence against attack.) after the disaster. The fish and shrimp had all been caught, and the shallow waters barely provided anything for the more hopeful swimmers trying their luck.

All the food had been buried under the rubble. The western part of the city had already been low on supplies, and with the hunger setting in, the refugees even started peeling bark from the trees near Feng Xiran's group to make a fire and boil water.

Feng Xiran and Xue Chenxi exchanged glances. They couldn't imagine themselves eating tree bark like the refugees.

Suddenly, there was a commotion in the crowd, and someone shouted, "The government has set up a porridge station in the east of the city!"

Upon hearing this, the eyes of the refugees lit up, and they rushed toward the east, holding any containers they could find.

Jing Wang clearly wanted to get rid of Feng Xiran and her group. To be safe, they decided to head back to Tianfeng.

"If Jing Wang spares these refugees in the west, might he still send people to hunt us down?"

At this point, he was acting recklessly, and he could easily find an excuse to kill them.

They had fled in such a hurry that they barely had any silver on hand, and feeding themselves had become a problem. Even if they had silver, it wasn't safe to take it out—didn't they see how many guards those passing carriages had?

Feng Xiran counted the people around them. There were less than ten left. Originally, they had 20, but they had clearly been scattered.

"What about the people we've lost?" Should they risk going back to find them?

Feng Xiran frowned and asked Xue Chenxi, "The relatives you mentioned—are they in the east of the city?"

Xue Chenxi was silent for a while before admitting the truth. She had been intrigued by the local customs of Yilin and wanted to explore.
