Chapter 65 "Young Master Si Yang is an Uncle?"
Feng Xiran was currently in a state of distress and was unaware that her elder sister was also "racing against time" to reach the area.
"There's activity down below."
While they were searching, distant sounds of surprise and barking dogs were heard.
Several people hurried over, carefully stepping on the mud and stones above to stabilize themselves. They crouched down and, indeed, faint knocking sounds could be heard from below. The dogs, disturbed by the noise, began to dig and make a commotion, so the villagers had to leash the dogs and dig themselves.
After about fifteen minutes of digging, they were able to see who was below.
"It's San Xiao!" someone recognized the muddy figure below and excitedly told others, urging them to help rescue their companion.
"Da Wu, I can't go on. Please, help me get the child out." San Xiao, weakened, pleaded with her companions.
Feng Xiran, seeing the situation, did not dare approach and stood by as the surroundings were eerily silent.
It appeared that this used to be a house's roof, with a constant risk of collapse and people being trapped. They could not afford to have too many people involved.
Looking up, the person below had a wooden beam impaled through their waist. Weakly, they revealed a child protected under them. The child, with eyes wide open and seemingly disoriented by the light, cried out. The sound of the child's cries echoed in the empty mountain valley. The child's mouth had traces of blood. Seeing the dirt mixed with blood on the person's hand, Feng Xiran realized the child might be hungry and bit her own finger to feed them.
"Is there still hope?" Feng Xiran asked Siyi softly. Siyi shook his head with a look of pity.
"San Xiao, hold on. I'll get the child out and then come for you." Da Wu continued to dig with an iron pick, but Feng Xiran noticed that her excessive force was causing the surrounding area to shake and quickly called for her to stop.
Da Wu realized something was wrong as the tremors caused the surroundings to loosen. She immediately put down the iron pick and started digging with her hands. A few lighter villagers quietly came to help.
Soon, they managed to reach San Xiao. San Xiao asked them to take the child out first. Once the child was out, she finally relaxed, forced a smile at her companions, and urged them to help the other villagers.
"San Xiao, don't worry. I'll get you out!" Despite the child being taken away, Da Wu remained determined, her eyes reddened as she continued digging.
"Just go. Don't waste your effort. My husband is probably gone too. He's in the next room. If you remember our friendship, just make sure my child is fed and cared for. She will recognize you as her mother and honor you." San Xiao, unable to see her child, told her weeping companion, looking sadly in the direction where the child had been taken. Her eyes gradually lost focus and went silent.
Da Wu, in grief, continued to dig despite being restrained by others, her mouth repeatedly muttering, "Don't stop her. She wants to save her!"
Feng Xiran felt a pang in her heart, holding the child tightly. Looking down at the child, who was still ignorant of the situation, she seemed to sense the adults' emotions and began crying again. Frantic, Feng Xiran called for Siyi to check if the child was alright.
The child's cries brought Da Wu back to her senses. She dazedly looked up and rushed to Feng Xiran, trying to snatch the child away: "Quick, call your mother. The child hasn't called for her yet."
