One- Mistake

Shaking like a leaf, Levi stared down at the dead body in front of them. The blood on his hands felt like weights. He had already dropped the gun that he shot at them, but it was still there. That’s what upset them most of all. He kicked the gun away as he kept staring at this guy. He wiped his hands on his pants to try and get the blood off. Oh, now it was on his pants and his hands! He decided to just keep his hands as still as he could. Levi barely registered what happened. All he knew is that this guy jumped him, and Levi managed to pry the gun away from them. Then he accidentally shot it! The bullet hit them right in the chest. He really tried to save them, but it was bad. They must have thought he was a Peggie. In his defense, he was only wearing Eden’s Gate clothes to not be bothered by them. They were getting really aggressive lately, something about their dad being arrested.

Levi slowly knelt down to the body. Oh lord, what were they supposed to do now? God. They were wearing a uniform. Hope County Sheriff’s Department is what it belonged to. God, no, they killed a cop! He clenched his jaw as that fear kept creeping in. He checked their pulse in vain. Nothing! Levi never killed somebody before, nor did he want to. How did his choices in life lead up to this? He should have joined the Peggies when that attractive guy asked maybe.

As Levi kept rethinking his life choices, a radio sounded on. He jumped as he realized it was coming from the body. He froze as he listened.

“Have you managed to reach Fall’s End yet, kid? It should be marked on your map. In Holland’s Valley.” A hoarse man’s voice came from it. He couldn’t tell if it really sounded like that or if it was just from the radio. Levi, without thinking, grabbed the radio. He glanced down at the body before pressing the button and speaking.

“Uh, no. Not yet.” He responded. He tried to make his voice go as low as possible. He should have tried to ration those testosterone supplements. God he hated this voice. The silence from the other side was really fear-inducing given the situation. Maybe they had a higher-pitched voice.

“Holy shit. You talk?!” The man on the other end sounded surprised. Levi’s body dropped. They were mute, weren’t they? At least if they were, this man didn’t know.

“Yes?” Levi answered, unsure, beside his better judgment. His eyes strayed back to the body. “What- uh, what am I doing in Fall’s End again?” He kept up that low tone even though his throat was already hurting. Granted, he was screaming before this.

“I told ya’. If we’re building a resistance, we’re gonna need to recruit as many as we can get. Pastor Jerome leads a band of those against the cult in Fall’s End, but Peggies took it over. They might lend some assistance if you lend them some.” The man spoke back in a rather snippy tone. Levi cringed. The person they killed probably knew that.

“Got it. Uh, I’ll be on my way.” Levi noted before turning off the radio. He exhaled as his shoulders slumped. God, why did he do that? A resistance against a cult? That meant Eden’s Gate. He made a promise to himself that he wouldn’t get involved at all. He was gonna hide in his house and wait it out! It had been working. It had been working up till now. He was just going out because he needed more food. If he went to the Peggies, he could get food no problem as long as he told some white lies. Then this body - or person - jumped them. Part of him wanted to go back to his house and keep holding out, but every day, that seemed less and less possible. Cult put sinner on his house despite his efforts to make it look abandoned. He was rather afraid of what they meant with that, especially since they already tore up his garden. He could try to help out that town for this person. Avenge their death without killing himself.

Levi slowly rose. One look at that gun got them shaken again. He really killed someone! He rubbed his wrists, cringing at the blood on his hands. He needed to change his clothes; one because of the blood and two because it was Peggie’s clothes. A thought crossed his mind as his eyes turned to the body. He snapped his eyes away. It was already monstrous to kill someone, and it would be even wrong to steal their clothes. His skin crawled with the thought of stripping them down, too. He swayed side to side on his feet as he stood there to think. Every slight rustle and noise made him jump in fear of someone catching him looming over this body. A blind person would be able to tell he killed them. A murderer is what they would call them. He huffed as he figured out what to do. Go back home, bury this person, change, then head out to Fall’s End to help however he could. He prayed to god that it didn't involve more killing; this already shot his nerves. Levi grabbed the body’s arms. Damn, they were stiff. He breathed out as he began to pull them back to his house. How long of a walk was it?

_____

It was a beautiful orange evening sky when they started, and now it was a starry night sky. Levi was sweating like a pig after he patted down the dirt with his shovel. He panted as he popped his back. There was now a grave on his quiet property. He dropped the shovel down as he made his way back to his cabin. He remembered how happy he was to get it for such a low price at first. He didn’t have much when he got here. It was a relief that the previous owner gave it away for less than five hundred and wanted out of here fast. The only downside is that he had to live with a cult! It was a nice space just for him. He pushed up the door with some effort. His muscles screamed because of it. He took a look at his boarded up windows, and the spray painted SINNER took away the sense of comfort. He closed the door behind him, making sure to click the lock in place.

Levi had to leave definitely - his kitchen was raided. His shoulders slumped upon seeing his back door off the hinges. Damn Peggies kept committing crimes. His kitchen was a mess with all the drawers open, and his kitchen knives stolen. If they went through the kitchen, they went through the rest of the house. A brief glance to his right showed that stuff was taken off the coffee table in the living room. The couch cushions were also moved. His footfalls were soft as he checked the other two rooms. Bathroom drawers were all open, and he knew his pads were gone. Most of his toiletries were honest. They left him a roll of toilet paper at least. He went further down to his bedroom. Surprisingly, it was left untouched. A feeling of hope flooded him upon checking it. Thank the Lord!

Levi could smile again as he went to change for the night. He would get some shut-eye and leave in the morning. No idea what he would do for breakfast, but he could figure it out! A baggy t-shirt and shorts is what he put on before going over to his bedroom door. He locked the door in case Peggies decided to come during the night. A quick glance confirmed his window was still boarded up. Their muscles relaxed instantly upon hitting the mattress. The stress of today was fading already. His eyelids felt heavy as he scooted up to his pillows. One glance down made him realize he didn’t wash the blood from his hands. Oh well, he’d get to it tomorrow.
