He held onto it, too scared to let it go. It felt like his only anchor.

Percy was never one to celebrate good news. Sure, on the rare occasion that joy found him, he'd want to sing atop the acropolis and dance.
However, that's not what instinct taught him. Instinct was what kept him safe, and his family alive. It was something he had to follow blindly, even if it meant giving up everything he had.
He would do absolutely anything for his family, and their well-being.
But somehow, today, he was grinning like a fool. Elation seemed to be singing in the air, throbbing in his veins and his heart; his heart couldn't stop beating like a madman the moment he'd seen Annabeth.
Everything about her took his breath away, which was an odd feeling since she usually made him want to stop breathing and lay down in an early grave.
He chalked it up to happiness. It was a drug that was making him go insane, and he was determined to enjoy this fleeting moment before his fears set in like gruesome wraiths.
"Are you going to tell me what's going on with you?" Annabeth asked, looking over her book. She sat cross-legged in Luke's private library,
having finally chosen a book to read.Percy was beside her, as always, making sure she didn't detonate. "Only if you tell me what's going on with you," he shrugged, smiling.
"You're the one who's been giggly all morning," she pointed out.
"Ah," he tilted towards her, "but you're the one who's been pretending to read that book," he jutted his chin towards the mass of pages in her hand, "while your eyes haven't left me."
Annabeth turned away, "that's stupid," she mumbled.
She faced him with her regular glare a moment later, "Tell me what happened. I demand it."
