Liam received the watch on his tenth birthday. It was a simple black digital wristwatch, unremarkable in every way except one: it was counting down.

"This is all the time you have left, son. Make every second count," his father told him.

And Liam did just that. As the watch ticked down, he made the most of every moment. He traveled to far-off places, climbed mountains, and dived into the depths of the sea. He made friends, laughed until his sides hurt, and loved with all his heart. No matter what he faced, he was never afraid—he knew exactly how much time he had left.

As the years went by, the watch continued its relentless countdown, and Liam continued to live boldly and fearlessly.

Finally, the day came when the watch began its final countdown. Liam, now an old man, stood on his porch, gazing at all he had achieved and the life he had led.

He shook hands with his lifelong friend and business partner, the man who had shared in his successes and failures.

His loyal dog trotted over, wagging its tail, and Liam gave it a gentle pat, thankful for its unwavering companionship.

He pulled his son into a tight embrace, proud of the person he had raised.

He kissed his wife softly on the forehead, cherishing the love they had shared through the years.

Liam smiled, feeling a deep sense of peace, and closed his eyes, ready to meet the end he had been prepared for his whole life.

But nothing happened.

The watch beeped once and then went dark. Liam opened his eyes, still standing there, very much alive.

He should have felt relief, perhaps even joy. Instead, for the first time in his life, Liam felt something he had never known.

He was afraid.
