The late afternoon sun bathed the quiet suburban street in a warm, golden light, casting long shadows across the front yard of a modest yet inviting home. The house, a charming two-story with a red-brick facade and navy blue shutters, sat on a corner lot, surrounded by a lush garden that Giyuu tended to religiously. It had taken years of hard work, saving, and late-night conversations about the future, but this house was theirs. It wasn't just bricks and wood; it was a place filled with love, laughter, and the memories they had built over the years.
Inside, the smell of a home-cooked meal lingered in the air, and the sound of soft music played from the kitchen radio. Giyuu, now in his mid-thirties, stood at the stove, stirring a pot of curry. His dark hair had grown a little longer, but streaks of silver had started to pepper his bangs. He still carried that calm, stoic presence, though the years had softened him around the edges. His deep blue eyes, once filled with quiet sadness, now held warmth and a contentment that he never thought he'd find.
As he finished preparing dinner, he glanced up at the window above the sink, catching a glimpse of Sanemi outside in the backyard, laughing with their two kids. The sight made his heart swell.
Sanemi, still every bit the whirlwind of energy he had been in his twenties, had aged gracefully. His silver hair had stayed relatively the same, though there were more laugh lines around his eyes now, and his once sharp, brooding demeanor had mellowed into something softer. He had become an incredibly devoted father, and seeing him out there, still as playful and fiercely protective as ever, filled Giyuu with an overwhelming sense of pride and love.
Sanemi was playing soccer with their son, Mitsuo, who was thirteen now and taller than Giyuu had been at his age. Mitsuo had come into their lives four years ago, carrying the weight of a difficult past. He'd been through the foster care system and had learned to be wary of adults, especially those who claimed they wanted to help him. But over time, through Sanemi's tough-love approach and Giyuu's quiet, steady presence, Mitsuo had started to trust them. He was still figuring things out, still struggling with the scars of his past, but there was a light in him now—one that had been nearly extinguished when they first met him.
"Nice kick!" Sanemi called, laughing as Mitsuo tried to fake him out with a spin move. Sanemi, of course, wasn't easily fooled and stole the ball back, dribbling it across the yard.
Akane, their sweet seven-year-old daughter, ran circles around them, giggling as she chased after the ball with her short, choppy black hair bouncing. She was the opposite of her brother—open-hearted, joyful, and incredibly affectionate. She had been just a baby when they adopted her, and in many ways, she had healed parts of Sanemi and Giyuu they didn't even realize were still wounded. Akane had a way of bringing sunshine into the room simply by being there.
"Papa, pass it to me!" Akane called, her little legs pumping as she darted toward Sanemi.
"Alright, get ready!" Sanemi shouted back, gently kicking the ball toward her.
Akane missed, but she didn't care. She laughed as she stumbled, then turned and ran after the ball, determined to give it another try.
Giyuu stood by the window for a moment, watching his family with a soft smile. He could hear Mitsuo groan dramatically as Sanemi teased him, and Akane's high-pitched laughter echoed through the backyard. It was the kind of peace and happiness he never thought he would have.
With the curry simmering, Giyuu dried his hands on a towel and made his way outside. The screen door creaked as he stepped onto the back porch, catching Sanemi's eye.
"Dinner's almost ready," Giyuu called out, his voice calm and steady as ever.
"Good, 'cause Mitsuo here is starving, aren't you, kid?" Sanemi grinned, grabbing his son in a headlock and ruffling his hair.
