SCP-049: The Plague Doctor

The Nikkes are confused, plague doctor?

"What does it means by 'plague doctor'?" Anis asks.

"You don't know about the plague?"

"Well... no."

"My god bruh. You guys lost too much mankind's history. The plague here, well based of this SCP, he's uh, I don't know, remember the guy wearing black thick robes with a bird mask in the video?"

"You mean..."

"Yes. That's the Plague Doctor. He's called that because, well because of how he looks like, comes from the 18th century."

"That explains a lot."

"But why the bird mask?" Neon asks.

"That's uh... another one. The reason why, as I searched on the internet, is because the beak could hold dried flowers (commonly roses and carnations), herbs (commonly lavender and peppermint), camphor, or a vinegar sponge, as well as juniper berry, ambergris, cloves, labdanum, myrrh, and storax. The purpose of the mask was to keep away bad smells, such as the smell of decaying bodies." When Agent says the last part, the Nikkes got chill down their spines. Just what happen that cause this?

"...What happens in the 18th century?" Rapi asks.

"The Black Death. A bubonic plague occurring in from 1346 to 1353. It was one of the most fatal pandemic in human history; as many as 50 million people perished, perhaps 50% of Europe's 14th century population."

The Nikkes are shocked, horrified that, such a pandemic reduced mankind's population so much. Though not as much as the Raptures did, but it was, really devastating for humanity at the time.

"W-what..?!" Privaty speaks out.

"This... is insane..!" Pepper says.

"It is. At the time, with how medical care was, they lost a lot. Still, the world kept spinning, and the bubonic plague known as the Black Death becomes a part of mankind's history, known as one of the most fatal pandemics ever."

"...How could such thing happen..?" Pepper asks.

"Because, the bacterium Yersinia pestis and spread by fleas and through the air. Even the rats also have it."

"Is that why... he was called the Plague Doctor?" Mary asks.

"Well you could say that. The European writers contemporary with the plague described the disease in Latin as pestis or pestilentia, 'pestilence'; epidemia, 'epidemic'; mortalitas, 'mortality'. In English prior to the 18th century, the event was called the "pestilence" or "great pestilence", "the plague" or the "great death"."
