4 MONTHS LATER....

The house isn't big but it could be a chance. Winter has finally ended and not soon enough. Lori is heavily pregnant and carl has grown at least five inches taller. I've also grown an inch or two. I'm officially as tall as Lori. I'm also taller than beth now.

Speaking of beth, we've become very close, best friends for definite... or at least she thinks that.

"May, stay focused." Dad nudges me gently, and I nod, holding my machete and running into the house as soon as the door opens. I'm one of the people at the front with t dog and my dad. Arrows fly through the air and knives squelch.

I lodge my machete into the skull of a walker and it drops flimsily to the ground. There isn't many on the bottom floor so it's almost immediately cleared. We stand by the stairs waiting for any walkers to come stumbling, adrenaline pumping through our veins.

But none come out so I look to Rick, nodding and everyone else follows inside.

With a splatter of blood spraying up my Jeans, I yank the machete out of the walker and continue up the stairs, knowing that Rick and the others have downstairs covered.

One of the steps creak, making someone jump and hold my hand. To no one's surprise its beth and I smile.

My dad keeps on sayin how much me and Beth like eachother but I refuse to listen. There's no time for relationships when we just need to focus on surviving.

I peek round the corner as we near the end of the staircase and nod, indicating that nothing is there.

"Check all the cupboards for anything valuable; ammo, food, lighters, meds, rope - anything." I tell beth and she nods.

Carl is following behind beth and I smile at him.

"You good?" I check on him.

"Just hungry." He replies and I nod, agreeing with the statement.

I walk off in a separate direction to carl towards the bathroom.

The cupboards are empty all besides a packet of aspirin and two loose bullets. Everything counts, right.

I walk out into the hallway coincidentally the dame time as carl and I nod at him. "What you got?" I ask and he shows me two cans. Two cans of dog food.

"Mate. We ain't eating dog food." I grab the cans out of his hand and smile. "We'll find something soon." I reassure him and he smiles back sorrowly before walking back down the stairs.

"You find anything?" Rick asks me and I hold my hand out, the loose packet of aspirin and the couple of bullets sitting upon my callused fingers.

"Well, we'll take what we can get." He sighs, grabbing the packet and bullets.

After a few moments of silence, everyone turns their heads in a synchronised way towards the window, where the groaning is coming from.

"Walkers. Go get your stuff; we're going." Rick orders us and I grab my bow and run outside, passing Maggie the shovels and heading tintoretto the back seat of one of the cars, awkwardly ending up invetween Maggie and Glenn.

"That was close." Glenn tries to lift the spirits and I smile at him, signalling for him that's its not the time right now.

~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been an hour and a half of driving and Rick decides to pull over, talking about our next moves since we're almost running into two colliding herds of walkers.
"We have no where left to go." Hershel states and I looka t the map. Places are circled and crossed out.
"Our best option is to go left, through the forest and hopefully we'll have found something." I state and Rick rubs his chin in deep thought.
"Maybe." He says. "We're running out of fuela dn there's nothing for miles. I say the kid is right. We go through the woods." He nods respectively at me and I smile an exhausted, pained smile back at him.
So then we set off deep I to the forest. I'm not exactly sure where we're going but Rick spots something in the distance.
"Is that... a tower?" He asks and starts running up to the clearing to get a better view.
We all attempt to run after him, both exhausted and starving.
Twigs snap and muffled groans are heard from the distance. Then we see it. A prison. Fully fortified and protected but also full of walkers.
It's perfect: there's gates and locks, there'll be food and water as well as beds and gardens.
"Holy shit." I mumble and Rick nods, my dad gazing over the building.
"Rick we can't it's full of walkers." Maggie protests and Rick shakes his head in response.
"We can clear them." Rick's confidence is hope bringing but also one of the stupidest things I've ever known. But I don't dare question it. He's got us this far and I'm confident that that's enough to believe in him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"May, you're going with Maggie, t dog, glenn, and me," rick orders, and I nod as he continues. "Daryl, you cover us." My dad agrees with the plan. We're all stood outside the fences. everyone that can't fight as well is handed a knife to attract the walkers to the fence and stab as many of them as possible.

Rick taps my shoulder and I glance at beth who smiles reassuringly. It's crazy to think that beth should be 17 now, and I should be 18. I was ready to celebrate my birthday by moving away from my mother and now birthdays don't even matter anymore.

Beth, Lori, Carl, hershel, and the others all walk along and soon enough you can hear them screaming and shouting, banging the gates with their hands as the dead turn their rotten heads to gaze at the sound, slowly but surely enough, reaching them.

"On three." Rick whispers, barley audible, and we all nod.

"One." Everyone gets into position, knives in the air.

"Two." Adrenaline pumps through our veins.

"Three." Everyone waits for a moment before the gate slings open...
