My eyes opened, puffy and red, hurting from crying myself to sleep the night previous.I blink away the tiredness and sit up slowly. Beth's snoring isn't herd, and neither is the rustling of her sheets. I look below me and see not a single person on the bottom bunk.
My legs dangle over the edge of the top bunk for a few moments before they make contact with the ground.
That's when I started to see people. Glenn walks up to me with a smile. "How was your sleep?" He asks me, and I nod simply, indicating that it was okay.
"Did it sleep late?" I ask him, and he shakes his head.
"Nah, we just got up really early." The sarcasm is thick in his voice.
"Very funny." Rolling my eyes, I can't seem to smile. "Where's Beth?" I ask, eager to change the topic.
"Over there." Glenn points at the main area of the cell block while he walks down the stairs.
"Thanks." My response is short and sharp, making him frown before I walk towards where Beth is.
Beth sees me coming and immediately looks around for something - anything else to do, instead of talking to me. But there's nothing to do.
"Hi." She says simply, stiffening up slightly.
"Hey." I smile softly and hastily sit down next to her. "About last night -"
Beth cuts me off. "Can we just pretend that didn't happen. For my sanity." My brows furrow at her words, and I look her up and down for any sight of a lie, but she seems to be genuine.
"What?" My words stumble out of my mouth like water. "After all this time. All of the holding hands and blushing, you never liked me..?"
Her eyes wander for a moment, pondering whether she actually did like me but finally comes to a conclusion. "No. I don't like you, may." She takes a calculated pause. "I never did." Then she stands up and leaves. The faint sound of her feet on the concrete sounds out until it eventually fades away. She left me. Just like I should have expected.
But I need to stop moping and get ready for today. It's a big day, after all. Me, Rick, dad, and t-dog are gonna clear another area of the prison. I have no clue why Rick is letting me come. I mean any able body, right..?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ready?" Rick asks, handing me my bow, which now has sharpened edges thanks to carl so I can use it a spear when not using it to shoot arrows.
"Yep." Is all I answer so Rick and daryl finally agree that we should go.
It's only a short walk to the area that we are going to clear. A few minutes at most is all it takes for us to arrive.
The keys rattle in the lock for a few seconds before my dad opens the door slowly. Rick is the first in, holding his torch at his chest, aiming it ahead so that him and everyone else is sure that they can see.
In the first corner that we go around, we immediately see dead bodies. Quite a few of them. The blood is relatively fresh, and the once human bodies simply are now the remains of one.
As we walk further in, Glenn marks the walls with arrows so that we can find our way back from the maze that we're currently in.
The pattern continues a few times until we hear distant groaning. It sounds like only a few, so we don't begin to panic, Rick signalling for us not to. a few moments later, when we rounded the corner, we all started swearing, and Rick was yelling at us to fall back and head to the cell block.
There's around thirty walkers, at least, so everyone begins to panic. Glenn and Maggie wander off while I stay right next to my dad, almost like I'm glued to his side.
"In here!" Rick shouts, and we all follow him through a doorway that leads to another hallway. The door shuts behind me. Everyone is panting and holding up their torches when I hear hershel Wander off.
"Hershel, we have to stick together." I whisper softly, but he shakes his head.
"I heard Maggie." He tells me, and I nod okay, following his lead.
The first few corners are easy to remember the way back when he keeps on going without hesitation.
"Hershel, mate. We should get the others first before we wander off." I attempt to explain, but he seems to ignore. The only thought in his mind is to find his daughter. "Hershel!" I whisper as loud as a whisper can possibly be.
I look back for a moment, deciding whether to run back and tell them or not. But by the time I get there, hershel would've disappeared in the maze completely. So I continue to follow the old man.
"Hershel, c'mon -" but before I can finish, the air is filled with guttural screams from deep within his lungs. There are over three walkers on top of him, already knowing at his flesh, ripping apart his sking with their teeth.
"No!" I yell and stab two of them in the back of their heads before dragging one from off of the man.
As soon as I know, I'm on top of the creature and impaling it through its skull before it can take one more bite.
Hershel is lying on his back, small whimpers and shattered breathing leaving his mouth.
"It's gonna be okay. Listen to me, hershel. It's going to be fine." The man tears up at my words before smiling.
"Tell them I love them and..." hershel attempts to finish before choking on a sob of pain.
"I'm so sorry." A tear rolls down my cheek in solitude. This is Beth's and maggies father. Loris doctor. Our family. And it's all my fault that he's dying. Maybe if I had gone back to get dad, then hershel could have died peacefully from old age.
His eyes look directly into mine as he attempts to speak again. His mouth opens, but not a sound comes out. In less than a few moments, his shaking body is limp. His tears are still. His eyes are lifeless and watery from the previous tears.
Maggie rounds the corner fewer than a minute later, watching as I look up at her is guilt and grief. It's my fault that the woman standing over me's father is dead.
