It wasn't supposed to happen. Not like this, anyway. These phrases kept popping up in Soobin's head.
Soobin had every intention of keeping things under control—of keeping the game going without tipping his hand too much. But sitting there next to Yeonjun, the room quiet except for the soft scratching of pens on paper, Soobin's thoughts were swirling, too loud to ignore.
Yeonjun was too close. Not in the literal sense (though, yeah, their elbows were kind of brushing), but in every other way.
Every time Yeonjun shifted in his seat or glanced his way, Soobin felt his heart stutter a little.
It was ridiculous. He was supposed to be calm, collected—he was supposed to be teasing Yeonjun, not feeling like he was about to explode with every glance.
Maybe it was the way Yeonjun had been quieter lately. Less flirty, more... uncertain?
Whatever it was, it was making Soobin's chest feel tight, like there was something stuck there, waiting to be let out.
"I'm done," Yeonjun said, putting his pen down and stretching, his long arms reaching up over his head. He turned to Soobin with a lazy smile. "What about you?"
Soobin blinked at his paper, realizing he hadn't written anything for the past ten minutes. "Uh, yeah. Done." He shoved the notebook into his bag, hoping Yeonjun wouldn't notice how distracted he was.
They sat in silence for a moment, the usual ease between them feeling just a little off. Soobin could feel it—the shift, the unspoken tension that had been growing for weeks. It was like the air around them was different now, heavier, filled with all the things neither of them were saying.
Yeonjun shifted in his seat, glancing at Soobin with a nervous edge in his eyes. "You... okay?"
There it was again. That question. Yeonjun had been asking it more and more lately, and every time, Soobin had brushed it off. But this time, something in him snapped, and before he could stop himself, the words tumbled out.
"I like spending time with you."
The second the words left his mouth, Soobin wanted to crawl into a hole. He hadn't meant to say it like that, so bluntly, without any teasing to soften it. But now it was out there, hanging in the air between them, and he couldn't take it back.
Yeonjun blinked, clearly caught off guard. "You—what?"
Soobin swallowed hard, his face heating up. "I just... I mean, I enjoy hanging out with you. You're fun to be around."
He tried to sound casual, but even he could hear the way his voice wavered, betraying how nervous he really was. This was way more real than he had intended, and now he had no idea how Yeonjun was going to react.
For a second, Yeonjun just stared at him, his expression unreadable. And then, slowly, a grin spread across his face. "You're not messing with me, right?"
Soobin's heart pounded in his chest. "No. I'm serious."
Yeonjun blinked again, his grin softening into something more genuine. "I like spending time with you too."
There was a pause—one that felt like it lasted forever—and Soobin could feel the weight of his words settling in, his cheeks started to burn a shade darker, leaving tiny spackling of pink across his cheeks on to his ears.
He had just given away more than he had meant to, but Yeonjun wasn't freaking out. In fact, he seemed... happy?
Yeonjun leaned back in his chair, trying to act casual, but Soobin could see the glint in his eyes—the one that meant he was holding back a smile. "Well, in that case, I guess we should hang out more."
Soobin's chest loosened a little, and he couldn't help but smile, just a tiny bit. "Yeah. I guess so."
