They think it was a quirk, actually.

It makes sense, most things are, but this didn't used to be a  thing until about 50 years ago, but the fact that there was a quirk that  could alter reality and the future on such a large scale?

They never found the person who did it, but most people didn't care.

In the world, as of 50 years ago, 95% of the global population had  a soulmate.  Of that number, about 1% had more than one.  Soulmates  could use each other's quirks, for a short period of time or much  weaker, but people used this to find their soulmate.  The strength of  the borrowed quirks increased with the strength of the user and the  strength of the bond.

Not all soulmates worked out; it was just the universe's way of  choosing someone for you, but you still had to make it work, and it  didn't always.  Some people never found their soulmates, and were  perfectly content in their marriages and lives, and of course there were  the people who never had one in the first place.

The quirkless had extremely difficult times finding their soulmates, since they had no quirk to be borrowed.

Izuku was excited for his fourth birthday, so he could find out if  he had a soulmate.  He loved quirks, so he knew it didn't matter what  type of quirk they had, he would love it.

"I'm sorry, your son is quirkless."

He felt the All Might toy drop from his hand and found he couldn't  move.  Everything was numb.  His mom was still talking to the doctor,  but he couldn't hear either of them.

He didn't mind being quirkless, from a power perspective.  He would still be a hero.

But how would his soulmate be able to find him?

Kacchan immediately said they were no longer friends.

"What moron would want to be friends with a quirkless loser, let alone  soulmates?    If you even have one, they're lucky they won't know it's you."

After two weeks, he was crying and yelled at everyone to leave him alone, and their eyes glazed over and they walked away.

"Heh," Kacchan had sneered, "soulmates with a fucking villain, huh?  Fitting."

October made it so Kacchan's punches hit harder.

"My soulmate has a good enough quirk to be my partner!  Not like your shitty soulmate."

One time, Kacchan shoved him and Izuku felt something building up  in his palms before they exploded.  They both startled, but Kacchan  ignored him for the next two weeks.

Then he found he could use the quirk of someone he touched, and Kacchan was back to sneering.

"Not one, but  two   soulmates.  Bet they don't even know you're there, so glad they have each other.  You'd just get in the way, useless Deku."

Izuku became resigned that day.  They had such cool quirks, and he  had nothing to offer.  They had each other, they didn't need him.

Even if he met them, he wouldn't tell them.  What was the point?  Kacchan was right, who would want something like him?

He spent the next years ignoring his borrowed powers.  They weren't his, and he didn't deserve them.

He was just a quirkless Deku, after all.

"Midoriya is applying to UA too, right?"

Izuku shrunk into his seat as the class erupted into laughter and Kacchan slammed his hands on the desk, palms popping.
