Maddie's POV
"HARRINGTON!" Billy shouted furiously, approaching us. Steve immediately stepped away from me.
"Billy, get lost." I knew Billy wasn't coming with good intentions, so I stepped in his way to stop him from getting closer to Steve. It was useless. With one shove, he pushed me aside and confronted Steve.
"What do you want now, Billy? Can't you see I'm busy?" Steve responded condescendingly.
"Dammit, Steve, don't make it worse," I replied, pulling at his arm. He had completely lost it. It seemed like he didn't value his life; as if he didn't know what my brother was capable of when there was a guy near me.
"What part of 'stay away from my sister' didn't you understand?" Billy growled, once again ignoring me completely as he grabbed Steve by the lapels of his jacket. He pulled him so hard that, from the force, Steve's arm slipped out of my hand.
"I understand perfectly. But you're the one who needs to understand that it's her decision if she wants me to stay away," I saw Steve struggling, trying to make Billy let go of him.
If Steve didn't shut his mouth soon, this wasn't going to end well.
"Well then, it seems I wasn't clear enough," shit, that ironic smile of Billy's. I had to do something now, though I might get hurt too.
What the hell do I do now?
"Stay away from her. I know exactly what you were going to do, and don't you dare even think about it again." Billy continued, finally letting go of him and pointing a finger in Steve's face. "This is the last time I'm warning you, Harrington."
"Or what? I'm not afraid of you, Hargrove. You can yell at me or even hit me, but that won't stop Maddie and me from being friends," Steve shot back.
For crying out loud, why doesn't he just shut up?!
"Shit! Shut up, Steve!" I tugged at him again, for the first time truly afraid that Billy was really going to hurt someone. For some reason, Steve mattered to me, and the fury in Billy's eyes was nothing good.
In fact, I don't think I'd ever seen him this angry before. I had to get Steve away from him no matter what.
"You should have listened to my stupid sister," Billy cracked his knuckles. "And since you can't shut up, I'll shut you up myself," he growled, shoving him hard.
Steve stayed on his feet, but I fell flat on my butt.
More shit. Not only did Steve ignore me, but he had the brilliant idea of shoving Billy back, which started catching the attention of some students still hanging around the school."Cut it out, you idiots!" I shouted, but my voice seemed to go in one ear and out the other. "Don't you realize how ridiculous you're being?!"
Before I even had time to blink, Billy had already lunged at Steve, landing a punch so hard it split his lip. I was about to step in, but once again, I didn't have time to react before Steve retaliated with equal force, splitting Billy's lip too. I kept yelling at them, scolding them, but they continued to ignore me, punches were flying back and forth as they dodged each other's hits.
Seeing that my shouting wasn't working, I stepped between them to make them stop. I knew neither of them would hurt me once they saw me in front of their fists.
"I said enough!" I shouted, extending my arms and pushing them both by the chest to separate them.
"Move, Maddie. Don't you see this orangutan's gonna hurt you?" Steve panted, visibly tired and bruised.
