I was sound asleep when the alarm went off. I was so reluctant to go to school that I completely ignored it. I turned face down, grabbed the pillow to cover my head, and blocked my ears. I was so lazy that I didn't even have the strength to turn off the alarm. After a few moments like that, I heard the alarm stop and someone roughly pulled the pillow away from me.
"What are you doing?" I grumbled, turning around to look at him.
"ME?" Billy was standing next to the bed, looking angry. "What the hell are you doing letting that damn alarm keep ringing and bursting my eardrums?"
"You're here to turn it off, aren't you?" I huffed, covering myself with the sheets.
"Maddie, get up." he said seriously. But I didn't respond. "Madeleine, get up, or you'll be walking or taking your sister's damn skateboard."
"When you leave my room. I still need to recover from the disgust of having your stupid face be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes." I replied from under the sheets. Instantly, Billy yanked the sheets off me and got on top of me, bringing his face very close to mine. "That's enough, Billy. Leave me alone."
"Either you get up, or I'll get you up. Choose." The light blue of his eyes darkened with the rage consuming him, piercing into my pupils. "You have three seconds."
"Forget it, blondie." I confronted him, pushing my face even closer to his.
"Three..." he murmured over my lips. "Two..." He continued, but I didn't respond and didn't look away from his gaze. "Maddie... Last chance."
"One." I replied slowly over his lips. I knew that being this close and standing up to him infuriated him even more.
"That's it, brat." he growled as he stood up. He got up on the edge of the bed and grabbed my ankles firmly, starting to drag me across it to try to throw me to the floor.
"Stop, stop!" I said, holding onto the fitted sheets as best as I could. "Damn it, Billy, you're hurting me, you're crushing my ankles." I grumbled, but he didn't stop. "Stop it, asshole!" I screamed as soon as my butt hit the wooden floor.
"This is nothing." He crouched down and faced me. He placed one hand on my nape and squeezed it tightly while pointing at me with his index finger with the other hand. "Next time, I won't be so gentle, got it?" he added before standing up. "Now get up. I'm sure your precious little sister is waiting for you in the kitchen."
"She's your sister too, idiot. Don't insult her." I replied, annoyed, as I got up.
"Stepsister." he retorted from the doorway. "I didn't choose to put up with you two, so don't expect me to consider you my sisters."
"Great, for once we agree on something!" I laughed sarcastically. He just smirked sarcastically, turned around, and finally left my room.
Frustrated, I gathered my hair into a bun, straightened my pajamas since Billy had disheveled me entirely, and went to the kitchen where, sure enough, Max was already making some toast.
"Good morning, shorty." I said, ruffling her hair as I passed by her on the way to the coffee maker.
"Good morning, Maddie." she smiled slightly, putting the toast on a plate. "Do you want one?"
"Yes, with some blueberry jam, please." I responded vaguely while watching the coffee drip into my mug.
"Are...are you okay?" I heard her ask behind me, with apparent concern in her voice.
"Yeah, sure." I turned to look at her with the full cup in my hands. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"I heard your argument with Billy from here." she said, sitting at the table to have a toast. "I heard you telling him he was hurting you..."
