Roxy
The four of us sit in the cafe round the corner from London's place. Drinking coffee, working out what's actually palatable on the menu and giggling.
'Roxy, you are such a cow!' Giggles Harmony. 'That poor boy.'
I laugh back but something feels off. I can't quite put my finger on it.
'Did you see the look on his face when he thought us three were waiting to be paid?' Harmony's laughing like a drain now.
'Priceless,' laughs Honey.
Angel stays quiet as she runs her finger down the menu.
'Angel? You ok?' I ask. I haven't known these girls long but Angel is an open book when it comes to emotions. She'd make a terrible poker player.
Harmony turns to Angel, but Angel keeps studying the menu. 'Babe, why are you pretending to read the menu? You never eat before twelve.'
Angel sighs, rolls her shoulders back and looks up at the ceiling.
'Uh oh,' says Honey.
'What?' I ask.
'Angel's unhappy,' Honey murmurs. 'She's talking to her spirit guides.'
I almost spit my coffee out laughing. 'Her spirit guides? You're kidding right?'
'Nope,' says Harmony. 'Angel talks to the warriors and the warriors talk back.'
'Warriors?'
'She comes from a long line of warriors,' says Honey in complete seriousness.
Angel levels her eyes at me and says, 'That wasn't nice Roxy. The spirits are very upset with you.'
'I'm guessing the spirits are male,' I say rolling my eyes.
The table falls silent as Angel's eyes pierce my soul.
Shit. She's serious. Maybe she's not pissed about London. Maybe she's pissed that I pretended the three of them
were sex workers?I flash back to the rushed conversation Angel and I had in London's hallway before she ushered me into his apartment. I told her I was kind of in a thing with him, that he'd been an idiot and I wanted to teach him a lesson. Asked her to give the other girls the nod to go with what I was about to do. But she didn't really know what it was that I was about to do. Just that I'd been with Jack at the beginning of the night.
I knew how close the trio were - I've met them on the scene. Noticed how they seem to have a secret language using their eyes. But when I spoke to her outside the apartment, even I didn't know the prank I was about to pull till the words were coming out of my mouth. Is that why she's upset?
'That man has a good heart,' says Angel. 'And you trampled on it...' She looks back up to the ceiling as though she listening to a conversation, and then back at me, as she says, 'You trampled on it twice.'
Chills run through me. Have I misjudged London? I just wanted to teach him a lesson, show him not to assume too much, too fast, but have I fucked up?
'What happened to him?' Whispers Honey.
Angel frowns, and then she turns to me and says, 'He has the same but different upbringing to you.'
This time my blood runs cold. London's family are fucked up too? What the fuck? It never occurred to me that he might be like me. I thought we were opposites.
'The spirit warriors told you all that?' Asks Harmony.
'No, the tarot did.' Says Angel.
'The tarot?' Screeches Honey. 'You gave him a reading? When?'
'It must have been after we'd gone to sleep,' says Harmony. 'Jesus, Angel, we've warned you about this before. You have to be careful with this stuff. Not everyone understands.'
'I know, I know, but he couldn't sleep. He was over thinking. Worrying. And I couldn't sleep because I could feel everything he was feeling,' says Angel.
'She's an empath,' Harmony tells me.
I nod back thinking this is some real Californian shit. I'm surprised at these London girls.
'Anyway,' continues Angel, 'I thought a reading might help and he was willing.'
'And did it help him?' I ask.
'Like I said, he's a good soul. I asked him what question he wanted to ask, but he kept it all surface. Didn't really ask what he really wanted to ask.'
'And what did he really want to ask?' Says Honey.
'I don't know for sure, but I think he's looking for love. The cards told me he has everything but that. However, the love he needs is different to most. It's hard to explain. His kind of love is rare and he needs someone to match that. Like a Twin Flame. That's not easy to come by.'
My stomach twists itself into knots. This can't be for real. She could be talking about me.
'Oh, there was one more thing the cards said...'
We all lean forwards in our seats. 'Yes?' We chorus.
'They said he should beware of two sisters. That one was already present and the other was coming soon.'
'Lilah?' I gasp. 'Do they mean Lilah's coming?'
