Hopeless.

That was how Athena Ragnarsdóttir felt.

Uhtred was still locked up. Alfred was dead. Thyra was dead. And there was no king of Wessex. Athena knew the Danes would have heard of Alfred's passing, and they would be marching soon.

And Winchester was torn—Athena was torn.

As Athena sat alone in front of the crackling fire, her mind was consumed by a whirlwind of emotions. She sat on the carpet in front of the fire, her eyes burning into the flames.

The flames danced before her, casting shadows that seemed to mirror the turmoil within her.

A deep sense of emptiness enveloped Athena, weighing heavily on her heart. Guilt gnawed at her conscience, each flicker of the fire illuminating memories she wished she could erase.

Lost in her thoughts, she gazed into the fiery abyss, seeking solace but finding only the echoes of her own regrets.

Athena was too lost in her thoughts to hear the door open behind her. She clung onto the furs around her shoulders, her legs pulled to her chest.

Finan leaned against the doorframe, watching her silently. The weight on her heart was clear in the way she sat, her shoulders slumped and her eyes distant. He cleared his throat softly, not wanting to startle her. "Hey."

She looked over her shoulder, flashing him a sad smile as she clung to the furs around her. "Hey." She uttered, turning back to the fire and looking away from him.

Finan pushed off from the doorframe and made his way over to sit down beside Athena, looking at the side of her face with a gentle look.

He noticed her grip on the furs, the way her knuckles were white from holding them so tightly. He reached out, placing a gentle hand over hers, his calloused fingers rubbing soothing circles over your knuckles.

"You feeling like talking about it?" He asked quietly, his gaze studying her profile in the flickering firelight. It pained him to see her so troubled, and he knew better than anyone how much she adored Thyra.

Athena softly shrugged her shoulders, a heavy sigh leaving her lips as she looked away from the fire and down at her hands. "I do not know." she uttered, fidgeting with her rings on the hand he wasn't holding.
