Don't make make themselves look pitiful

Dux POV

I reached the clearing within the hour and saw that everyone was settled down back to their normal daily activities.

"Lapis, status report." I called out, wading through the crowd of white fur. Lapis emerged from he crowd, standing out because of his larger size.

"All accounted for. No major injuries. The demon hunt was a success." he growled, trotting at my side. I nodded and touched the bowed heads of the wolves we past by before stopping in front of my cave.

Our home consisted of a field clearing in the front that led to the woods. In the back, there were plenty of caves lining the rock wall behind us. We were in an enclosed area that nobody has ever managed to find. In case we had to leave, each cave had an escape route through the rock mountain and into more woods.

"I'll be in summons with Serene." I notified Lapis. He nodded and left to his den next to mine. I watched as another slender wolf came out and nuzzled him. Two pups yelped and rushed out to meet him. I smiled to myself and pushed aside the vines that blocked the entrance to my den.

Inside was a small fire pit in the center with piles of animal fur pushed against one side of the wall that served as my bed. I walked over to my bed and leaned my spear against the wall among my many other spears. Taking off my wolf coat, I brushed it gently and quickly put it back on, feeling uneasy at the lost weight of it on my shoulders.

I walked towards the right where a table stood. I took a sip of water from the pitcher and reached into my pockets to remove my possessions of battle against the demons. Demons always leave behind some sort of body part when defeated in battle. Placing two black horns on the table, I leaned on my two hands and stared at the horns. I straightened my back before rubbing my face and placing the horns in a silver bowl on the table.

"Serene, I give you the horns from battle. Demons have been eradicated. Next hunt?" I chanted, cupping the bowl with my hands and lifting it to my face. Smoke started to rise and the horns faded away. Breathing in the smoke, my eyes rolled to the back of my head and I looked up towards the ceiling.

I felt as if my body was moving with the smoke, up and away from the Earth.

"Child." a voice boomed.

"You have done well. The demons are no more. However, your next task will be different and require a strong heart and mind."

"I live to serve you." I mumbled, bowing my head.

"The king in the East seeks a bride for his son. Make sure that the forced marriage doesn't occur." the voice echoed around me.

"Who is the girl?" I called out, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. The instructions were clear, but how was I suppose to protect the girl if I didn't know who it was. There was no answer from Serene. I sighed and placed the bowl back on the table before removing the knives along my waist. Unpinning my hair and letting it tumble to my waist, I peered into the water pitcher. Ice blue eyes sat on a narrow sharp face with pure white wavy hair framing the face. Everything about me screamed predator, an exact opposite of Angelica. She had blonde hair and sweet baby blue eyes with a cherub face.

Yelps and barks from outside my den jerked me out of my trance and I stumbled out with spear in hand. Lapis was instantly by my side, growling at anyone who came near.

"Enough!" I roared, pushing my way through the crowd. In the center was Curans and another wolf, Iratus.

"What's going on?" I asked, looking back and forth at the two wolves. They ignored me and continued arguing.

"Where is he?" she roared, baring her fangs at Curans, her litter mate. Curans growled at the sign of defiance and snarled back at her.

"How would I know? I'm not the pup's father! He's thirty nine moons old. He can care for himself." he growled. Iratus barked at him and her hackles started to raise.

"Stop! There will be no fighting." I snapped, baring my teeth and glaring at the both of them.

"Who wants to tell me why you two are fighting?" I asked, looking at the crowd that formed.

"Malum is gone." Iratus wailed, sitting back on her haunches. I scanned the area to see that sure enough that Malum, Iratus' son was indeed gone.

"If he wants to leave, he may leave. I can't do anything about that." I informed Iratus. She howled to the faint moon and collapsed in a heap on the floor. Curans licked his muzzle and crept towards his litter mate, uncertain whether or not to give his support.

"He'll come back. I'll personally lead the search packs myself." he murmured to Iratus, leaning against her as he settle down next to her. She whimpered and rested her head on her paws before heaving out a sigh. I rubbed my eyes and turned to head back into my den. Lapis padded by my side, only stopping to nuzzle his mate, Flos, and his two pups Apis and Nube.

Entering my den, I sank into the floor in front of the fire pit and started to build a fire. Lapis settled down next to me and laid his head in my lap. I gently stroked his head while staring into the memorizing sight of the new fire.

"What is bothering you, Alpha?" he asked, raising his brown eyes to meet mine. I frowned and bite my lip.

"Serene has asked me to stop an arranged marriage between the East King's son and an unknown girl." I said, throwing in another log into the growing fire. Lapis lifted his massive head and cocked his head.

"Are you sure? She has asked us to make contacts with the humans?" he growled, I nodded and stroked the fire with the tip of my spear.

"What should we do?" Lapis asked, baring his teeth slightly at the thought of mixing with humans.

Raising my now hot iron spear tip from the fire, I blew on it gently and buried it in the sand. Meeting Lapis' eyes, I smirked and looked back at the fire.

"What can we do? We are chained to her. We have to stop the king."
