LUNA

The figure had disappeared into the shadows, leaving me with a gnawing sense of dread. His words echoed in my mind, heavy and cryptic—'secrets you don’t even know yourself'. I could feel Kael’s eyes on me, burning with curiosity and suspicion, but I was too lost in my thoughts to face him.

What could that stranger have meant? I had lived my entire life in the light of the Luminari, trained under their watchful eyes, guided by their wisdom. I knew who I was, didn’t I?

"Who was he?" Kael’s voice cut through the silence like a knife, sharp and demanding.

I flinched, but refused to turn to him. "I don’t know."

A lie, but what else could I say? I wasn’t ready to admit that something deeper, something darker, was stirring inside me. Kael wasn’t stupid—he could sense it. And I hated that he was right.

"You’re hiding something," he pressed, his voice lowering to that dangerous, husky tone that always seemed to pull at me, no matter how much I resisted. "You always have been."

I turned then, meeting his gaze. The moonlight caught the hard angles of his face, casting him in shadow, making him look every bit the predator he was. "Why do you care, Kael? You’ve made it clear that you’re only interested in your own power."

His eyes narrowed. "Don’t pretend you don’t feel it, Luna. There’s something between us. You think I’m just playing a game?"

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Aren’t you?"

He took a step closer, his presence overwhelming, suffocating in its intensity. My heart raced, but it wasn’t just from fear. His eyes locked onto mine, and for a brief moment, the world fell away, leaving only the two of us, standing on opposite sides of an invisible line that we both knew would eventually break.

"You’re wrong," he said quietly, his voice softer than I expected. "This isn’t a game anymore."

I opened my mouth to argue, to push him away, but the words wouldn’t come. He was too close now, the air between us charged with a tension I didn’t want to admit. Kael Darkhaven, the Alpha of the most dangerous pack in the city, was looking at me as though he could see straight through me—through all the layers of light and innocence I’d wrapped around myself.

But before I could respond, a sudden chill ran down my spine. The shadows around us shifted, deeper than they had been moments before. Something was wrong. I could feel it, a presence lurking just out of sight.

"Kael," I whispered, my voice trembling. "We’re not alone."

His expression hardened instantly, his predatory instincts kicking in. He scanned the darkened streets, every muscle tense, ready to strike. I could see it in his eyes—the wolf, always beneath the surface, always ready for a fight.
