travis sat on the couch, staring blankly at the television. the news was on, but he wasn't paying attention. his phone buzzed next to him, and he glanced down at the screen. it was his brother, jason.

he sighed, answering the call. "hey," he said, his voice low and tired.

"hey, trav. you doing okay?" jason's familiar voice sounded concerned, which wasn't surprising. travis had been confiding in him more and more lately.

travis leaned back, running a hand through his hair. "not really, man. things are... they're not good with kayla."

jason was quiet for a moment, letting his brother gather his thoughts. "what's going on?" he finally asked.

travis exhaled sharply, feeling the weight of the past few months bear down on him. "i love her, jase. i really do. but... it's just so toxic. we fight all the time, over stupid shit, big shit, everything. i feel like i can't breathe half the time, like i'm constantly walking on eggshells just to keep the peace."

jason listened intently, his voice calm and steady when he spoke. "that sounds really rough man, do you think it's something you two can work through?"

"i don't know anymore," travis said, frustration creeping into his voice. "i've tried, we've both tried. but it's like... nothing changes. one minute, it's good. great, even. but then something happens, and it all falls apart again. it's this cycle, and i don't know if i can do it much longer. i'm tired, jase. i just want to be in a relationship where i feel... safe, loved."

"trav, you deserve someone who makes you feel at peace, not on edge all the time." jason said gently.

"i know," travis muttered. "but i love her, man. i keep thinking that love should be enough, that if i love her, i should stick it out. but lately... i'm starting to think it's not. love isn't supposed to feel like this, right?"

jason's voice was soft, reassuring. "no, it's not. love's supposed to lift you up, not tear you down.  you can love someone and still realize they're not right for you."

travis fell silent for a moment, his chest tightening. he had known deep down that his brother was right. "i think... i think i'm going to break up with her. i can't take how bad it's gotten. i've been holding on, hoping things would get better, but they're not. and i don't know how much longer i can keep pretending everything's okay."

on the other side of the door, kayla stood frozen. she had been coming down the hall when she overheard travis talking. her heart pounded in her chest as the words sank in. he was going to break up with her. he couldn't take it anymore.

jason's voice came through the phone again, quieter now, as if sensing the gravity of what travis had just said. "i know it's hard, man, but if it's what you need to do, i'll support you. you don't deserve to feel this way."

travis nodded, even though jason couldn't see him. "thanks, jase. i just... i wish things were different."

kayla slowly backed away from the door, her mind racing. she had heard enough to know that something was about to change, and she wasn't sure how to stop it. the fear of losing travis gripped her, but deep down, she couldn't deny that their relationship had become toxic.

as travis hung up the phone, he sat there in silence, unaware that kayla had overheard everything. he had made his decision, but the hardest part was still ahead of him.
