"i wonder every day, i wonder whose eyes you would've had, i wonder who you would've run to after scraping your knee, i wonder if you would've laughed like your dad, i wonder who you would've grown up to be, i wonder how beautiful heaven will be when i see you running towards me"
the cool night air hit them hard as they stumbled out of the club, a absolute contrast to the thick, loud atmosphere inside. the bass from the music thumped in the distance, but tay's mind was elsewhere. she held onto blake, who was swaying dangerously, her steps unsteady as if the ground were shifting beneath her feet. selena walked slightly ahead, phone in hand, tracking their uber.
blake hiccuped, her laughter slurring into a giggle. "tay, you're gonna hate me tomorrow."
tay sighed, gently brushing blake's hair away from her flushed face. "no, blake. you're going to hate yourself tomorrow."
tonight had been a mess. what was supposed to be a night of fun to distract from her breakup had only made tay more confused. travis had been creeping into her thoughts all week, and now, blake was falling apart in her arms, only making everything worse.
blake bent over suddenly, gagging. taylor quickly moved to hold her hair back. "hey, hey, it's okay. just breathe, blake. the car's almost here."
the smell of the pavement and blake's drunken breath were overwhelming, but tay focused, keeping her friend upright. selena glanced over from where she was standing, leaning against a brick wall, her face calm but concerned. "two more minutes," she said, nodding toward her phone.
tay nodded back, but her mind wasn't on the uber. she was trying to push away the thoughts of travis that kept creeping in, memories of his easy smile, his laugh, things that weren't supposed to matter. she shook her head, focusing back on blake, who had straightened up slightly.
blake turned, her face flushed and a lazy grin spreading across her lips. "you... you should've called him," she slurred.
tay blinked, her grip on blake's arm loosening. "what? who?" pretending like she had no idea who it could possibly be
"travis," blake said, dragging the name out with a smirk. "you should've called travis to pick us up."
tay's heart stuttered, her breath catching in her throat. "why would i do that?" she forced a laugh, though it felt hollow. "we've got an uber."
but blake's smirk grew wider. "so you two lovers could see each other. you know... kiss or whatever."
tay's stomach flipped, her face growing hot as blake's words hung in the air. wondering if it was even possible she knew about their kiss "what the hell are you talking about? me and travis? no way." her voice sounded too sharp, too defensive, even to her own ears.
blake waved her off, giggling drunkenly. "oh, please. you look at him like he's, like, the last guy on earth. and he's so hot."
selena stepped forward, her brow furrowing. "blake, come on, you're not making sense."
but blake, in her drunken state, ignored the warning. she leaned closer to tay, her voice a sloppy whisper. "you should just, like... go for it, tay. he's perfect for you. he's all tall, and strong, and that smile."
tay's mouth went dry. she opened her mouth to argue, but nothing came out. a part of her wanted to laugh it off, to brush it aside, but blake's words stung more than she'd expected. had blake really noticed something she hadn't?her thoughts spiraled, and for a moment, she felt exposed.
selena took a step closer, her voice firm but gentle. "blake, you're drunk. you don't even know what you're saying."
blake slumped back slightly, her giggling subsiding. "i know what i see." "he's with kayla, did you forget" tay said swallowing hard. "does it look like i care, who likes kayla anyways" blake replies with drunkenly giggles.
