Chapter 2 No Money
Looking at the meager forty-three copper coins, Zhang Beiting could hardly hold back a sigh.
This little money was not enough to redeem Song Yanqing's hairpin, or even the medicine sent by the medicine boy. If there was no money left from the hairpin pawn, it would not be enough.
Zhang Beiting slowly counted out fourteen copper coins and gave them to the medicine boy waiting in the yard.
The medicine boy took the money, told him to drink the medicine after dinner, and left.
While Song Yanqing was looking for and washing the medicine jar, Zhang Beiting looked around the kitchen.
There were only ten pounds of rice left in the rice jar, about three pounds of noodles, and not much oil and salt.
With this little food, no matter how frugal the two people were, they could not last long.
Zhang Beiting did not have all the memories of his original body, and he did not know how his original body planned for the future.
Now that he was here, if he did not want to starve to death, he had to find a way to make money before the remaining twenty-nine copper coins were used up.
Song Yanqing washed the medicine jars and saw Zhang Beiting in a daze under the grape trellis. After hesitating for a while, he went up to ask, "Do you have a hoe and a hatchet at home?"
"I'll go look for them." Zhang Beiting was not sure if he had these two things, but the front yard looked like it had been tidied not long ago. If it wasn't done by someone, it should be there.
The Zhang family used to run a teahouse and restaurant. There were many pots, pans, jars, and various utensils in the house.
Zhang Beiting searched for a long time before he found a hatchet and a rusty hoe in the corner of the kitchen.
"What do you want the hatchet and hoe for?" he asked.
Song Yanqing said, "Aunt He sent us eggs this morning, along with a bunch of green vegetables and a bunch of big green onions. The green onions were covered in mud. I want to clean up a piece of open space in the backyard and plant the green onions in the afternoon. If they grow well, we won't have to buy them in the future."
Zhang Beiting had just finished counting his assets. Before he found a way to make money, saving money was making money. Hearing this, he immediately picked up his tools and walked towards the backyard, "Let's do it together."
Song Yanqing hesitated and said, "It's too hot. You go back to the house and rest for a while. I'll do it." He looked at Zhang Beiting and felt uneasy. He had eaten a bowl of noodles in a hurry just now, and this person would feel uncomfortable for a long time. If he was exposed to the sun, he didn't know what would happen.
"It's not hot. It's faster if we do it together." Zhang Beiting refused firmly. Thinking of the only 29 copper coins left in the house, his coolness came from his heart.
Song Yanqing saw that he was determined and didn't say anything else. He thought that he could do more and faster when the time came.
When he arrived at the backyard, Zhang Beiting finally understood why Song Yanqing needed a hatchet.
The backyard was about the same size as the front yard. The pig pen and chicken coop had collapsed. Only the toilet should have been repaired. It stood alone in the corner of the wall near the back door. The rest of the place was overgrown with weeds half a person tall. It was impossible to tell what it was originally used for.
