The night was the first peaceful one in quite a while. Logan didn't wake up in a panic; He was wrapped around Wade all night long. The thin curtains that lined Wade's window filtered through a warm light as the sun rose. A muffled clatter of Al digging through cupboards and trying to find pans escaped into their room caused Wade to wake up.
He took note of how peaceful he looked, observing the relaxed expression he held. This time provided a little window into Logan's personality that Wade desperately wanted to know. Logan's eyes opened a bit, the comfort not quite leaving yet.
"Morning..." Wade whispered to Logan.
His embrace loosened slightly as Wade woke him up, and his eyes opened to reflect the warm, gold light that trickled into the room. He pushed himself back a few inches, giving himself and Wade a little bit more space. Logan rubbed his eyes, then looked down at Wade.
"Hey, bub..." Logan's voice was rough and lower than usual in the mornings.
His eyes scanned the room, taking in the little mosaics of light that danced on the walls. A faint blow of wind whistled quietly against the window, the gentle sounds of Al's TV laying over the soft sounds of the city.
Logan felt comfortable.
Wade began to let himself get distracted as he watched Logan wake up. His eyes drifted to the window next to his bed and he let himself get lost in the view.
Logan thought it was ironic. A sarcastic, mutant mercenary was the one to calm his nerves?
His hand dragged up across Wade's back and landed in between his shoulder blades. Before Wade could process, Logan held him tightly in a firm hug. Wade froze, unsure what to make of the situation. Logan hadn't seemed like a guy to do this at all. Ever. But Wade cherished the feeling nonetheless.
"You okay...?" Wade asked in a quiet tone. Logan nodded, setting Wade's forehead against his chest. He listened to the slight pickup in Wade's heartbeat, staying still and close. It was a sort of 'thank you' from Logan for everything Wade had done for him.
Wade carefully took in the moment, staying close as his mind poured every other care in the world out and into the air. His head was empty, as was Logan's, albeit for a strange sense of belonging.
That's when the first call came. Wade's phone started to ring.
Logan backed off to let him reach to the nightstand.
Wade hit the answer button and held the phone up to his ear.
"Hey, Weasel." Wade said. "What's going on? I'm in the middle of something."
"There've been more mercenaries going missing."Weasel said, a hint of worry tinging his voice. "Vanessa's gone, Wade. She's the most recent one. I figured I'd let you know. You should be careful out there, nobody has any clue what's going on. There's about 12 of us missing right now."
Wade stopped listening at the second sentence as his body underwent a rush of cold. It wasn't like he and Vanessa were a thing anymore, but it struck him almost speechless nonetheless.
"I will be...." He whispered. "You too, Weasel. You too."
The beep signified that Weasel hung up, and Wade put the phone down. He was a bit shaky, unsure of how to react.
"You alright, bub?" Logan questioned.
Wade looked conflicted. He was concerned about Vanessa, but he was careful not to talk about her too much in front of Logan in fear of scaring him off. The last thing he wanted to do was make Logan feel uncomfortable or like he had feelings for someone else.
"We can go look." Logan suggested. He knew how Wade felt, as he had felt the same thing before, and figured that they should at least make an effort to go search.
Wade nodded. He stood up, walking out to the kitchen with Logan, not exchanging another word. The two walked by the kitchen, forgetting any need for food as they locked the door.
Y'all I'm so sorry I was late to update!! Just woke up off of anesthesia a bit ago cuz I had to get surgery. I've got nothing I have to do so I figured I'd give an update. There's been school keeping me busy but also about 80 billion different medical appointments to get to. Everything is totally fine, just figured I'd let you all know so you didn't think I abandoned ship. Excited to keep going, and I think I've got a decent plot to follow? Not going to spoil too much but how would y'all feel about a sort of outbreak? I've got good ideas of how to write it, but if there are any other ideas out there you'd rather have then I'd totally love to hear what you've got!
As always thank you everyone who has been following the story! I've learned a bunch from comments so hopefully it'll improve. I know it's not perfect and there are some spots with bad flow, but I'm trying to work on it lol. Until the next chapter!
