Nawal stirred in her sleep. The moment she opened her eyes, she met another eyes staring down at her. She shrieked pulled the blanket over her face.
Jabbar chuckled at her reaction before reaching out to pull the blanket from her face.
"Good morning". He gave her a smile sitting by her side. She sat up trying to steady her heartbeat.
"You gave me a fright. why would you stay on my head like that?./ like some freek." She eyes him seeing as he found her situation funny.
"I didn't know admiring your wife when she's asleep is suddenly a thing that freeks do". He gave her an amused smile." Anyways that aside". Nawal wasn't looking at him. He stretched to pick something that has been on the bed side table." Happy birthday wifey".
Nawal turned to look at what he was holding.
"Wait it's my birthday". Her eyes dilated before realization settled in." Oh yes it's my birthday". She said. Jabbar chuckled softly. Was she serious.
"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday happy birthday happy birthday to you". He lit the single candle on the bento cake he was holding and handed it to her.
Nawal smiled genuinely. She collected the cake and blew the candle out. He passed her a table knife which she used to cut the cake before taking a piece to feed to him. He nodded his way in a negative way.
"Birthday girl first". He took her hand and guided the cake back to her mouth and she ate it. Before cutting another piece and feeding him too. He didn't stop her. He gladly took it.
"How did you know it's my birthday?". She asked genuinely curious. How did he know when she herself has forgotten.
"How won't I know my wife's birthday". He shrugged like it's the most obvious thing.
"We both know it's not as obvious as you make it look like".
"Well..... We're on good terms now. So it's expected I know".
She was about to reply when her phone rang by the side. She picked it up and on seeing the caller ID, a smile made it's way to her face.
"Dada naa. I was just thinking of you". She whined like a small child." I've missed you".
Hajiya Binta smile." Good morning to you too. how are you". The woman opted to say instead.
Nawal almost rolled her eyes. When did her mother learn sarcasm.
"Dada. Good morning I'm sorry. Good morning".
"How are you my dear. Happy birthday".
"I'm fine. Thank you. Ya kowa da kowa".
"Everyone is fine. And how is your husband".
Nawal looked at the said man. Smiling at him as he motioned for her to hand the phone to him. " Ya na nan". And she handed him the phone not after putting it on speaker.
"Ummi Ina kwana". He greeted with Nawal smiling.
" Dana lafiya kalau. Hope Nawal isn't troubling you.
"Dada I can hear you". Nawal sang and if she could see her mother she knows she was shrugging her away.
"I know you that's why I'm asking. Now leave me and my son alone".
"Dada. I feel betrayed by you. It was supposed to be me and you against the world." She was standing up from the bed.
"Naji din". She replied and Nawal left them to go to the bathroom.
When she came back he was done with the call dropping the phone on the bed side drawer.
She made her way and sat close to him.
