Song play: Youth by Daughter
Sophie stirred slowly, her eyes fluttering open as the soft morning light seeped through the thin curtains. The sunlight brushed across her face, warm but not comforting. It was quiet, too quiet for what she hoped would be a special day. For a moment, she lay still, staring at the ceiling, willing herself to believe that this time, this year, things would be different.
But the silence that greeted her told her everything she needed to know.
No footsteps rushing toward her room, no excited whispers from her siblings planning a surprise. Just the dull hum of the house, as though it were any other day. Her chest tightened, disappointment sinking in before she even had the strength to rise from bed.
She forced herself to sit up, her limbs heavy with the weight of her thoughts. Sophie glanced at the small calendar on her nightstand-today was marked with a tiny star, a reminder she had placed there weeks ago. Her birthday.
She ran her fingers through her tangled hair and sighed. "Happy birthday, Sophie," she whispered to herself, the words hollow, as if they barely belonged to her.
Sophie walked into the kitchen, still trying to shake off the heaviness that clung to her from sleep. The smell of freshly made breakfast filled the air, and the sound of laughter and conversation greeted her. Her family was already seated, eating together as though it was any ordinary morning. No one looked up when she entered. No one said a word about the day. She hesitated at the doorway for a moment, her heart sinking.
"Is this how every girl celebrates her 16th birthday?" she thought, watching her parents and siblings chat away. "Or is it just different for me... as usual?
"She took a deep breath, forcing a small smile as she made her way to the table, trying not to let the sting of disappointment show. "Maybe they'll remember later," she told herself. But deep down, she knew. They wouldn't.
As Sophie quietly sat down at the table, her mother's sharp voice cut through the silence.
"Sophie, why didn't you sweep the gutters like I told you to? I've asked you repeatedly, but you just don't listen. What were you even doing?" Her mother's voice was tinged with frustration.
Sophie blinked, caught off guard. "I... I forgot," she mumbled, looking down at her plate.
"Forgot?" Her mother's tone sharpened. "You always forget when it comes to helping around here, but you never forget when it's something for yourself. I'm tired of this.
"Sophie felt the familiar burn of resentment rise in her chest. "I said I forgot," she repeated, her voice growing louder. "It's not like I do it on purpose".
Her mother's face hardened. "Don't raise your voice at me. You've become so ungrateful. I do everything for you, and you can't even do the simplest of things I ask."
The tension in the room thickened, and before Sophie could respond, her mother's hand came down hard, a sharp slap echoing through the room.
The room fell silent. Her little brother froze, spoon halfway to his mouth, his wide eyes shifting between Sophie and their mother. Her father looked uncomfortable, but said nothing.
Sophie stood still, the sting on her cheek slowly giving way to a surge of anger. She turned to face her mother, her eyes blazing with fury and betrayal. For a long moment, they locked eyes, the weight of unspoken words hanging between them.
